WAIMATE COUNTY COUNCIL
The monthly meeting of the Waimate County Council was presided over by the chairman, Mr H. B. S. Johnstone. The financial statement presented showed a debit balance of £6135 4s 7d, compared with a debit of £4222 7s 5d at the same period last year. The accounts presented for payment amounted to £2850 19s 9d, and the receipts since the last meeting totalled £4536, made up principally by general rates £2606 lis 9d, hospital rates £1446 17s, harbour rates £299 4s 9d, relief wages £134 16s 9d, heavy traffic licenses £29 17s lOd. In the Lower Waihao water race account there was a credit balance at the bank of £257 4s, as against a credit of £222 IBs lid in February last year. Accounts presented for payment totalled £24, and the receipts since last meeting amgunted to £545 Is sd. The Lower Waihao Water Race Committer reported difficulty during the last month in maintaining a sufficient supply of water in the races. The main race had been found to be leaking badly. The new race at Redcliff would have to be guarded by barbed wire. Complaints received from the Waimate Automobile Association about several cases of gorse and broom growing on roads and about high
fences at corners obscuring the view of motorists, were discussed, and it was decided to ask the county engineer to interview the settlers concerned.
The Main Highways Board wrote advising that the Otaio-Hunters road in the county had been declared a main highway. The South Canterbury Electric Power Board requested the council to carry out the board's election for representatives on the board at the same time as the council elections in May, and advised that the council's area included the Borough of Waimate. The chairman said the matter was being attended to. Cr. A. S. Elworthy was appointed the council's representative at the farewell by South Canterbury local bodies to Lord and Lady Bledisloe at Timaru to-day. The engineer was asked to inspect and report on a high hedge near the borough boundary, at the corner of Timaru and Parsonage roads, which was alleged to block the view of motorists. Regarding the proposal to form a road giving access to Mr H. Jackson's reserve at Makikihi, the Canterbury University College advised that Mr s M. Dalziel would discuss the matter with the council on his next visit to Waimate.
Mr J. R. White, Springbrook, St. Andrews, said that work done by the council, was causing water to lie on
his land, and he asked that the matter be rectified. The engineer was instructed to inspect and report. Regarding erosion by the Waimate creek at Waimate Settlement, it was decided to advise the Commissioner of Crown Lands that though the matter was not one strictly for the council, it was prepared to allow the engineer to assist In supervising any work which it might be desired to carry out. It was decided to place in the hands of the county solicitor for collection a list of unpaid county rates for the year, 1933-34. The county clerk submitted a " list of land in the county, which the Government had subjected to a rebate of 12£ per cent.
