As a gesture ol' sympathy, and to help them in their financial difficulties, the central committee has set up a subcommittee. consisting of Mrs O. T. .J. Alpers, Mrs C. C. Davis, Mrs A. F. Wright, Mrs W. G. Scannell, Mrs A. J. Benzie, and Mrs Lachlan, to assist the Woolston branch. This sub-committee met yesterday, and it was decided to hold a bridge party at the Jellicoe Hal! on Monday, March 11. for which tables may be booked with any member of the committee.

Scouts, wolf cubs, and girl guides combined to give them a happy birthday. Colonel Granville Walton, who is accompanying the Chief Scout this tour, said this morning that Lord and Lady Baden-Powell celebrated their joint birthday when staying with friends near Wellington. The local wolf cubs started the day by serenading the two leaders. Then girl guides took possession of the house and cooked the breakfast. Boy scouts stood by to run messages and deliver the many messages, telegrams, and cables that arrived for Lord Baden-Powell and his wife during the very happy day. BRIDGE PARTY i\l:ss Bitty Deighton. who is to be married next week, was the guest of honour at a very cheery party given by Miss Marguerite Baxter at. her home in Knowles street, whore large bowls of blue hydrangeas were used for decoration.

LOVE—LANE The wedding was celebrated last week at All Saints' Church, Ruapuna. of Kathleen Francis, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs R. Lane, of Ruapuna, to Robert John, eldest son of Mr and Mrs J. Love, of Arundel. The Rev. Trevor Williams performed the ceremony, and the organist was Miss Gwen Ross. The church was prettily decorated with pink and blue flowers, hydrangeas and water lilies prodominating. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a frock of white crepe satin, with yoke and skirt godets of lace. Her long veil, which formed a train, was held in place with a coronet of orange blossom, and she carried a shower bouquet of white flowers and fern. The bridesmaids were Miss Myrtle Lane, sister, and Miss Valmai Reid. cousin of the bride. They wore georgette frocks with lace yokes, with cowl neck-line and lace insets in the skirts, Miss Lane's frock being of blue and Miss Reid's pink georgette. They wore head-dresses of georgette trimmed with silver leaves and flowers. and carried bouquets of flowers. They wore crystal necklaces, the gift of Ihe bridegroom. The train-bearers were Miss Joy Gallop, cousin of the bride, and Master Billy Lane, the bride's brother. The former wore a frock of pink georgette and carried a posy of flowers. and the latter wore a suit of while satin.

Mr J. Love, brother of the bridegroom, was best man. and Mr F. "Wilkinson was groomsman. As she left the church 1 lie bride was presented with a decorated horseshoe by her cousin. Narinc Olsen, and her nephew, Master Alick Bennett. the reception, which was held in the Ruapuna Hall, Mrs Lane received the guests wearing a brown frock trimmed with beige georgette, a brown hat to match, and a fur stole. She carried a bouquet of flowers. The bridegroom's mother wore a black and white frock, with hat to match, and carried a bouquet of flowers. For travelling the bride wore a navy blue tailored costume, and a brown skunk fur. and navy hat and coat to match.

An evening wedding was celebrated recently at Holy Trinity Cliureh, Greymouth, of Phyllis May, only daughter of Mr and Mrs I*'. W. Powell, of Christchurch, to Edward George, second son of Mr and Mrs Ashby. Ambcr--11 y. Archdeacon J. A. Jermyn officiated. The bride, who was Riven away by her father, wore a gown of ivory French satin, made on classical lines, with a tiny coatee. She also wore her mother's bridal veil and coronet of blossom, and carried a sheaf of Madonna lilies and fern. She was attended by Mrs W. S. Ashby as matron of honour. She wore a frock of shell pink satin beaute, made to lit tightly to the knees and finishing in a full flare to the ankles. A wreath of pink and lemon-shaded flowers encircled her head, and she carried a sheaf of pink and lemon gladioli.

The- Wellington Free Kindergarten Association is now leading in the "copper trail race" with the Christchurch association. This race is a novel method of raising funds; the course is from each centre to the halfway point between the two. a distance of 87 miles. Every penny added to the collections represents two yards of the distance, so that £319 is required to reach the finishing mark. When the last announcement of progress was made some days ago, Christchurch had collected £7B 12s 9d and Wellington £62. The latest announcement is that Wellington is leading with £l2O 12s 4d to the Christchurch total of £BB 2s 3d.

WOMEN'S DIVISION OF FARMERS' UNION

REDCLIFFS BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held in the Redcliffs croquet pavilion, Mrs W. J. Smyth presiding over a good attendance. An invitation was read and accepted from the Styx-Harewood branch for a group picnic to be held at the Christchurch Gardens. Mrs Smyth gave an interesting talk on the conference. held in Christchurch in January. The roll call was "the most enjoyable day of the holidays." The competition results were:—Best article made from sugar bag, Mrs Colee 1, Mrs Tippet 2, Mrs Mauger 3. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames W. Smyth, Haughtori, ?nd J. Darling. MONTALTO BRANCH There was a large attendance at the monthly meeting of the Montaito branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union, held in the Montaito School. The vice-president (Mrs G. B.
