RESTRICTION ON KILLING

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PHESS. Sir,—As a client of Thomas Borthwick and Sons of many years standing. please allow me space to enter an emphatic protest against the compulsory closing of Borthwick and Sons' works by high-handed Government action.

We may take it thai some of the oppositionists to this Scottish company are enthusiastic supporters of the Chamber of Commerce. Has not that body time and again reiterated the time-worn slogan of less government in business? Then why this unwarranted restriction which is going to place us as producers at a disadvantage'.' Otherwise interested parties often glibly refer i i disparaging terms to Borthwick and Sons, who dare to give their customers the best price obtainable by running their works to capacity, thus keeping their costs down to the lowest. We are told, "Wait until they have ousted their oppositionists and then you will see." Considering that Borthwick and Sons' killings arc only about 15 per cent, of the South Island killings, there docs riot, seem fo be any danger, and in any case, "Sufficient i"ito Ihe day is the evil thereof'' ! N". either let us have' government control of all industry, or unfram- | melled continuance of private enter- | prise bv those who can run (heir [business satisfactorily and honestly to [ the best advantage of themselves, their clients, and the consumer. We can not have it both ways.—Yours, etc., R". Ct. WOLFF. Bennetts. February 25, 1935.
