LICENSING OF WOMEN TRAINERS OPINION OF NEW ZEALAND VISITOR "J regard the Victorian Racing Club's ban on women trainers as ridiculous," r-:uid Mrs J. Campbell, trainer of the Australian Cup candidate Vintage, as she stepped ashore from the Wanganella at Sydney on February 18, says "Onlooker" in the "Sporting Globe." "Why shouldn't women trainers be licensed?" she asked. "Results show that they know their job. But I suppose it will be only a matter of time before the Australian authorities see lit to grant licenses to the 'weaker' sex. "Not many years ago racing, aviation and cricket were regarded as close preserves for men, but_ to-day women are demanding recognition in all branches of sport." Mrs Campbell, who has been training in New 'Zealand for nearlv 10 years, says that racing in the Dominion is on a very low level. Taxation is killing sport, and unless the Government sees fit to lessen the burden that the turf lias been forced to carry in recent years the future will sec an exodus of many Dominion trainers, who will be forced to make Australia their permanent home. May Not Start Speaking of Vintage's Australian Cup chance, Mrs Campbell said that there was no certainty that the horse would run. "To my way of thinking, he is badly handicapped," she declared. "He has at least 51b more than he was entitled to at Ellerslie. Both Vintage and King March met at even weights —9-6. In the Australian Cup Vintage is asked to concede King March 181b. so you see that Vintage's compatriot has a tremendous pull over our horse. "Moreover, Vintage has run only once beyond a mile and a half. That was in the Auckland Cup, in which he met interference and was unplaced. Whether he will stay the two miles and a quarter of the Australian Cup remains to be seen. I do not know the form ol' Australian horses, but should Vintage run in the Cup we naturally will fear the opposition of King March."

.Vintage will have his first Australian start in the weight-for-age race on the opening day at Flemington. It will depend entirely upon his run in this whether lie will keep his Cup engagement. Mrs Campbell says thai she will have nothing to do with Vintage during his Australian tour. 3ho has made llic trip lo Melbourne with her husband, Jim Campbell, purely from a holiday point of view.
