BOWLS I In the final of the singles championship of the Sumner Club J. S. Martin defeated T. F. Chambers by 18 to 10. The game provided an excellent display of bowls. In spite of the troublesome wind the winner was in good form. Martin has now won the singles for the sixth time in succession, and the doubles for the fourth time in succession, together with the rinks championship. The winning of all three events in the same year is also a record for the club. Death of Mr G. Humphreys In the death of Mr George Humphreys the borough of Sumner has lost 1 one of its most valued friends. Mr Humphreys was for many years closely associated with the work of the Beautifying Association in its endeavour to preserve and create beauty spots. For many years practically every sports body in the borough has benefited by his assistance; he has held the position of patron or vice-president on numerous occasions. He was a familiar ligure, seen mostly at Sumner during the week-ends. Rowing The painting of the rowing shed was put in hand last Saturday, and one side of the roof was finished. It was thought that there would be enough paint on hand to do the whole roof, but. its condition was so bad that it was found that the paint was absorbed by the one side. It is proposed to give ! the roof two coats and to finish the pavilion in a month. Richmond Ilill Golf Club Mr V. E. Hamilton presided at a meeting of the committee of the Richi mond Hill GolE Club, held in the pavilion on Thursday evening. ' The chairman referred to the great | loss which the club had sustained in the death of Mr George Humphreys. Besides being the club's patron for many years, lie had shown that he had the club's welfare at heart in many ways, and frequently he had assisted the club in a practical manner. A resolution of sympathy was passed with the relatives. The greens committee reported that a certain amount of burning off had been done, and the remainder of the fairways would be cut this week. Arrangements were made to hold a work-ing-bee on the course to-morrow, and all interested members were invited to attend. The match committee submitted the proposed programme for the year. The captain explained the working of the new "Stableford" method of scoring, and it was decided to try out the system early in April. A scheme to encourage new members by providing prospective players with second-hand clubs was explained, and a sub-committee, consisting of Messrs F. J. Glackin, H. E. Hastie. and J. D. Lawrence, was appointed to advance the proposals. The chairman reported on various improvements which had been made in the pavilion, and unanimous approval was expressed of the alterations. Mr J. B. Bruges submitted a programme for the yearly Easter competitions which was approved. Opening day was fixed for March 24.
