! ♦ j BOROUGH WORK j Improvements have been made to the North Beach Park by the transfer of chippings from Baker street and Racecourse road. Progress is being made with the manuka fencing on the esplanade, north of Berry street. Clay has been carted to Hawke street for the repair of footpaths, to the South Brighton tennis courts, and for providing a foundation for the new croquet ground in the Rawhiti Domain. Rubbish bins have been provided at three points between the 1 eact Memorial Hall and Berry street. The number of relief c " ployed on borough work is a decrease of one compared witn iasi week. Municipal Golf Links A meeting of the Municipal Golf Links Advisory Board was held on Tuesday, Mr E. A. M. Leaver pie- " A n ie'tter of appreciation of the splcndid special work carried out on the links during the year was received from the Rawhiti Golf Club. Mr J. W. Ross, of Hanmer, who v. as engaged by the board as a professional last year, has been reappointed to the position, and will take up his duties shortly after Easter. A notice of motion was tabled to the effect that: "Rule 1G be altered to read as follows: "That an entrance fee of £1 be made for men players and 10s for women players, and tnat the annual fees for men be A 2 lus anu for women £1 10s." The motion will come up for ti scussion at a special meeting of the board on March 22. Kawliiti Domain Board At a meeting of the Rawhiti Domain Board, held on Thursday, Mr E. A. M. Leaver presided. The use of the various sports grounds in the domain for the forthcoming season was granted as follows: The present hockey ground, to the Rawhiti Hockey Club. The central football ground, to the New Brighton Rugby Footbail Club. The new football ground, to the New Brighton Rugby League Football ClubThe New Brighton Amateur Atmetic Club was granted the use o£ the tracks, and was given permission to take up a collection to-day, at its annual meeting. i j Social Evenings The winners at the bowlers" progressive whist drive were Mrs H. A. Bishop and Mr W. Larcombc. At the New Brighton District High School committee's weekly euchre, held on Thursdav. Mesdames F. Power, H. Hannah, T. Shaw, and Messrs G. C'attermole. S. Hamilton, and A. DunI can won the prizes. There was a i very good attendance, and the competition was won by Mr L. R. Hurrell. The Returned Soldiers' Association held its weekly card evening and dance on Wednesday in the Oasisrooms. Mrs F. Power and Mrs RossSmith, and Messrs P. Webb and T. Quaid were the winner:' at. cards. The dance music was played by Mrs ; Fuller, and Mr S. Hamilton was the ; master of ceremonies. The Monte | Carlo was won by Mrs Brimmer and i Mr F. Power.

Gadd (Tonks street* is ! making satisfactory progress after her ! serious illness. i Football Dance j A daticc to assist in raiting funds for the newly-formed New Brighton Rugby I Union Football Club was held in the Memorial Hall on Thursday evening. The music was supplied by the Maisie Ottey-East Orchestra. Mr Norman Carson played an extra. Mr D. McKcnzie was the master of ceremonies. Mesdames W. Ea=t. R. Parker, and D. MeKenzie organised the dance, and Mr and Mrs L. Colville were the winners of the lucky spot waltz. The winners of the Monte Carlo were Mr Jarvis and Miss Erena Lunn. A competition for a bap of sugar was won by Miss Nellie Brez. The Mayor of Christchurch, Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P. 4 who was present, said that he was pleased to have the opportunity to say a few words in support of an effort to form a Rugby Union Club for New Brighton. New Brighton should be able to support a successful Rugby Club, Mr Sullivan said. Perhaps it would not be possible to place all grades in the field, but the club should be able to run one or two grades. He urged the necessity of encouraging the boys' clubs and thus preparing players to take their places in the senior grade..
