, —♦ — RANGIORA There were good congregations at St John's Church yesterday when harvest thanksgiving services were held. The church was decorted with flowers, fruit, grain and vegetables. At the children's service in the morning the Sunday school pupils brought their gifts of various kinds, which, with the fruits of the soil displayed in the church, will be sent to St. Saviours Orphanage. ; KAIAPOI A progressive doubles tournament for the Rose walking stick was played at the Kaiapoi Working Men's Bowling Club's green on Saturday afternoon. The winners were J. E. Monk and J. Price. HA WARDEN : March this year will be one of the : busiest months of the year in Ha- | warden. A successful ewe fair m i ideal weather, took place on Thursday, |at which the Presbyterian Ladies' j Guild, which catered for the la.' I *, ' netted more than £4O. The MethodistI ladies' stall also had a very success- : ful day. On March 2i>, the Hawarden Agricultural and Pastoral Association will hold its show and, judging by i the enthusiasm shown the entries this , year should be very large. A severe • "frost on Thursday, however, will spoil | many of the entries in the cut blooms i and "the vegetable sections. On Fri- ! day next, the District High School will | hold a big fair to raise 100. The i money will be devoted to improvements to the grounds and fences, buv- ! ing sports materials, typewriters, lib- ' rary books, and other necessary school ! equipment. The children of the school have already assisted in raising £B. ! The rivalry between the two houses, Gladstone and Hawarden, has been very keen. Hawarden is leading with | £3" 10s, and Gladstone has collected £3 4s. Members of the school committee have received gifts of sheep, bags of wheat, and other produce, and the fair promises to reflect the spirit ! of the return of prosperity and optim- : ism to the country generally. The school has done remarkably well duvi ing the last 12 months. Belle Gray, *i Standard V. girl, won the Sutton Agricultural Cup. for growing the best po--1 tatoes in the North Canterbury Schools' Agricultural Club, and William Pierce : has won the Central Dairy Company's ; challenge cup for the best calf reared : by the members of the calf clubs of I the North Canterbury schools. It is ; expected that this cup will be prei sented on the day of the fair. Under i the ration scheme for teachers, the j school received an additional teacher to ! the staff. Miss Ballinger, who has been : trained in secondary work. ] Members of the Hawarden School ' Committee, the staff and the children : met recently to bid farewell to Miss T. Larsen. the dental nurse at the i school clinic. Miss Larsen. who will , shortly be married, was presented with ; several articles of crystal-wart.-, the I presentation being made by Mr J. W. j Warwick, chairman of the dental I clinic committee, who paid a tribute i to the fine work done by Miss Larsen. ; and conveyed the good wishes of the gathering to her. KOYVAI BUSH A meeting of the Kowai Bush branch 1 of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union held its , monthly meeting in the hall. Mrs Cox ' presided. Mrs Howell was appointed I secretary until the end of the tinancial j year in place of Miss Russell, who has ' left the district. It was decided to arI range an entertainment, probably a : lecture and dance, to raise funds for 1 the branch.
