♦ j REDUCTION IN RATES (PRfj'J IJSOf Trine HAM.) THAMES, March 10. The Borough Commissioner for Thames 'Mr C. L. Grange) has fixed the rate for 1934-35 at 3s o'.d in the £ on 75 per cent, of the present valuations, except where advantage has been taken of sections 45 and 50 of the Valuation of Land Act. This represents a 13 1-3 per cent, reduction compared with 1933-34 and includes 5 per cent, discount on payments of monthly .instalments within 30 days of 'he due date. The estimates provide for a total levy of £18,392. The estimated collection is £11.967, or 07 per cent., the same percentage as in 1933-34. Provision is also made for the payment of 77\ per cent, of the interest owing to debenture holders after a reduction of 20 per cent.. The estimates also provide for an increased hospital levy. The Borough Advisory Committee has approved the proposals. AWATERE COUNTY RATES U'EISS ISiOCUTIOIi TEl.raS\.'J.) BLENHEIM, 'March 10. In spite of four years of drought, the Awatere County Council reports that in the current year it collected £6886 out of £7292 struck in rates, almost 95 per cent. In addition, £1943 out of £3883 in outstanding rates came in. The figures are regarded as a satisfactory indication of an improvement in farmers' conditions, as the district is purely a farming one.
