RAM FAIR.
A DULL SALE. - DECLINE ON 1931 VALUES. Tho annual ram fair, conducted by th« Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association was commenced at the Show Grounds at Addington, yesterday, when the flock rams were sold. The day was an ideal one for the auction, there being little sun or wind. Thore was a very large attendance of farmers and breeders. Sellers from Otago, Southland, Marlborough, Blenheim, Wairarapa, Waikato, and Manama tu were represented. The entrv was 5005 which was 500 below that of last year. In the individual catalogues the principal increase was in the Southdown section, where ihere were nearly 300 more sheep penned than at the fair of 1931. 1 here were also a few more Shropshircs. In all other breeds there were marked decreases, with the major one in the Corriedulo section. Eyelands were a much smaller section, a fact which was due no doubt, to breeders being able to find a fairly ready market by private sale, cither in New Zealand or Australia. Table of Entries. The following table shows yesterd:iv's entTy as compared with that at the two previous fairs: — 1930. 1931. 1932. English Leicester .. 1105 15S8 1515 Southdown . • 1168 1113 1396 Shropshire •• 147, S" Suffolk .. •• - 3 ° Ky^a l " l •• fir, ni; Border Leicester .. ->O.» 4;>.) obMerino •; Lincoln ' 40 i Halfbred • • 261 430 24/ Homnev Marsh .. 405 347 340 Corriedale •• 2099 1351 1003 Totals •• ui)24 5000 0000 Condition of Entry. Generally the sheep came forward in good condition and showing that considerable attention had been paid to maintaining the high 'standard set by this fair in the manner in which the sheep were produced. In the three principal sections, English Leicester, Corriedale, and Southdown, there was a big representation of quality rams, but the "tail" in each case was fairly pronounced. In each of these sections the culling of from 10 to 15 per cent, would have greatly improved the offerings. Lack or bone, constitution, and evenness in the wool were general faults in some lines, and this class scarcely attracted more than the upset price of\l guinea, if even that, in the majority of cases. Market Disappointing. Eeviewing the market as a whole it was disappointing—buyers - confining themselves to values below those ruling at the Christchurch fair last year. The really high quality, big-boned, Wcllwoolled sheep, showing typical characteristics of their breeds were the only ones which attracted competition. Rams not up to the mark were little sought and were often quite neglected. The fattening breeds did not % attract such keen competition as was the case last year. Passings were frequent in the largest sections. Market for Lamb Breeds. Southdowns attracted the principal attention from buyers as far as the demand for fattening breeds was concerned. The demand actually for evenlocked, well-woolled sheep was as low as it has been for many years. From the outset of their auction it was evi- ( dent that quality sheep would attract steady competition tljrougliout the sale, and such proved to be the case, although the entry constituted an over-supply, the result of which wAs a fairly sharp easing, in the final - quarter of the auction. The market, nevertheless, was singularly irregular at stages. Even aheep of well-known- breeders drawn late in the sale were hard to quit, and there were .many passings of that grade. •The average price, over all. would winge from 2$ to 4 guineas. The top price for Bouthdowns was 10-i guineas, secured for three aplendidly-brought-out sheep sold on account of H. J. Andrew (Maheno). Two sheep sold on account of J. L„ Macfarlane (Lyndon) before the auction commenced brought 10 guineas,' -while the best price secured during the day for a pen of five_ sheep was 81 guineas for that sold on account of B. Dysart (Seddon). The top price for the section last year was 13 guineas, secured for one sold on account of Madeley Bros. (East Eyreton). In 1930 the top price was 10} guineas, and m 1929 it was 15 guineas. English Leicesters produced an interesting sale. The entry was the largest of the individual sections, and was of
such an "extent that buyers had sufficient choice of good sheep to be able to neglect almost entirely those of indifferent quality. Bidding was very slack throughout the English Loicester sale and prices were very disappointing. The upset price of ono guinea was rarely exceeded, if obtained, for inferior sheep, and passings were numerous. ■ Well-grown rams were in demand, but buyers operated to strictly defined limits even for them. Sheep most fitted for fat lamb production were most sought. The top price was 7J guineas, secured for five sold on account of H. J* Andrew (Maheno). At the fair of last year the top price was 7 guineas. The Border Leicester entry was quite a largo one, but they, too, experienced a dull auction, with low prices general. The top price for the section was 5 guineas, secured for a pen of five sold on account of J. L. Macfarlane (Lyndon). Eyelands. There was a much smaller entry of Ryelands than usual, and the few offered found ready buyers. The top price for them was 71 guineas, secured for five sold on account of T. A. Stephens (Irwell). The top price at last year's fair was 3 guineas, and at the 1930 fair was 12i guineas. Mr Stephens topped the market in 1931. Shropshires. The entry of Shropshires was considerably larger than that at the 1931 fair. Tho top pricejfor the section was 3J guineas, compared with 3A guineas last fair. Yesterday's figure was secured on account of A. W. Adams (Sheffield). Splendid Eomney Marsh. The entry of liomney Marsh sheep, which included representation from some of the best-known breeders of the North Island, was one of very even quality. However, the sale was disappointing, with the demand limited throughout. Compared with last fair, values recorded a material decline. The top price was 5} guineas, secured for •five sold on account of IX S. Warren (Featherston), while W. B. Hunt .and Son (Nelson) sold a pen of five at 5i guineas. Tho top price for Eomney Marsh in 1931 was guineas, secured on account of Allan Grant (Waiinate). Merino and Lincoln. The principal breeder represented in the Lincoln section was William Rayner, of "The Cliffs," Masterton, and his last pen of one brought the top price of 7} guineas. It was a good sale for Lincolns. Sir Charles Clifford (Stonyhurst) was the only breeder represented in the merino section, in which the top price was 2i guineas. Halfbreds, in Demand. The, entry of halfbreds totalled 247, as compared with 430 at the fair of 1931, and as the result of a greatly reduced entry tho "tail" was not nearly as pronounced as usual. There were some fine big-framed sheep penned, and other districts in the South Island outside of Canterbury were represented. Throughout the market was quite a keen one for the better quality sheep, and the demand was reasonably steady. There were a few passings, but later a good clearance was made, as buyers came into the market late to make purchases privately at figures which must have been considered satisfactory to the sellers. The top price for the breed was 6J,guineas, paid for five sold on account of W. J. Jenkins (Sheffield). Corriedales. The fact that the fine wool has lost the greater part of its premium over crossbred for the time being, at least, has certainly depreciated the value of the Corriedale to-day, and this was amply evidenced by a very disappointing. sale for the breed yesterday. Competition was • confined to k i small field of biiyors, whose limits showed very little elasticity. : .A heavy proportion of . the entry was.passe din at autcion with the' values offered very low and this lack of interest was not merely confined to the poor quality. Pen after pen was passed at various stages. The one spurt of'the market was the purchase of the pdn of five sold on account of William Anderson (Waiau) at 9Jgns. They were magnificent sheep. The sale of stud rams will commone? this morning. ; Range of Values. The following is a range of the sales as compared with last year's fair: —
