SHEFFIELD EWE FAIR.

TWO TOOTHS SLIGHTLY EASIER. The early ewe fairs demonstrated a decided buoyancy in the market, but the values ruling at them were not maintained and during the past, week there lias been an easing. That the lower basis has gained the confidence of farmers seeking ewes appeared evident from the steady auction at the Sheffield . fair held The demand was a free one, and 100 pens offered three only were passed at auction. Late rates for older sheep were maintained throughout the market, with two-tooths slightly easier, and lambs, especially those showing some condition and freshness, very firm. The bulk of the sheep in the Sheffield fair are drawn from back-country stations, and although keenly sought after, they do not show the same high quality as those entered at fairs on the plains. In comparing actual prices with elsewhere this fact should not be overlooked. Yesterday's offering included numerous lines which had come straight off the native, and' from high, hard country. The Sheffield fair has considerable importance as it 'is one of the last at which really large station lines are on offer.

The entry totalled 13,919 head, being the largest offered in the, yards for some years. Last , year the total was 11,200 and in 1930 it was 12,300. The weather was beautifully fine ' and tho attendance of farmers around the pens good. The proportion of choice young sheep was small and the general average quality was not high. Two-tootlis did not attract the main attention, and they sold somewhat erratically with competition inclined to drag at some stages. All other classes, however, met a steady demand, and even the older ewes of very ordinary type, were not difficult to quit. Probably in anticipation of an advance in the export schedule the sale for lambs was Very keen. The bulk of the lambs were open-woolled' sorts, which naturally increased their appeal; and accountod in so'me measure for the firmness of the demand for them.

The Top Prices. The top price for the sale wag 18s Oil, paid for 108 two-tooth haifbreds, which were offered on behalf of. a client from outside the district. They were goodframed evon-woollcd sheep. The next best price was 17s 3d, secured for the first run out of the line of 227 twotooth Romney cross sheep offered by L. Morrison (Darfield), which brought from 16s 9d to that figure.
