LIFE-SAVING.

CANTERBURY CENTRE. LIST OF AWARDS. A meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Head Centra of the Royal Life-saving Society was held last evening; Mr M. E. Lyons presiding. A protest was received from the New Brighton Club against a departure from the x-ules in the conduct of' the Nelson Shield competition at Taylor's Mistake on February 20th. . ..

It was decided to accept the explanation of the officials, and the chairman moved formally that the protest of the New Brighton Club be dismissed. In that case, he said, the New Brighton Club could appeal to the New Zealand Council, who could deal with the matter. Men would have been drowned on that day _ if the suggestion of the club been, carried out, for the conditions were very bad. The referee had been Quite' right in using his discretion. The only alternative would have been to call it - no competition, and would not have been fair to the visiting teams. The motion was carried, and it was decided to send a copy o£ the judges' statement to the New Brighton Club. The Timaru Girls' Life-saving Club applied for affiliation. The application was granted. Awards Approved. The following awards were confirmed, the examiners statins that the work of each candidate was exceptionally good in every respect. Each candidate filled every place jn the seven-man team in a highly creditable manner, this being done in seven, consecutive "run-outs" in the water: .
