LOGAN POINTER.

SIRE OF RECORD BREAKERS SUCCESSFUL BROOD MARES. (By Miles.)« When the Riccarton owner-trainer-studmaster, Free Holmes, on one of his periodical visits to America, secured the five-year-old stallion Logan Pointer, he did the sport of trotting in New Zealand a real service, for Logan Pointer later proved far and away the greatest progenitor of speed ever imported from America or bred in NewZealand. In making his selection of a stallion, Mr Holmes showed a good deal of foresight, for while most of the stallions from America had been bred on trotting lines, he recognised that the demand in New Zealand was for pacers, not trotters, and it was only natural to suppose that pacing-bred horses would produce pacing stock. Although there are several trotters by Logan Pointer—the greatest being Trampfast —practically all his stock were favoured with a natural pacing gait which was a big help in the early stages of training.

It may be said that Logan Pointer received more chances than the average stallion, but if he had proved a failure in his first few seasons breeders would not have persevered with hiin. The natural pacing gait was popular with trainers, and the Logan I'ointors developed early speed —a consideration with owners and trainers who appreciate an early return of any outlay made in the purchase of a young horse. Thß imported horse, while fairly well patronised in his early stud life, had to provo himself, and this lie did in no uncertain manner, for while his name does not figure very frequently as a sire of the winners of the classics, both Childe Pointer and Latoua credited him with tho Sapling Stakes before he had been at the stud very long, and both Derbies also came his way more than once. Foaled in ]909, Logan Pointer did not conic to Now Zealand until 1915, and a kick from a pony Tunning with him in the paddock in 1924 ended his career. If Logan Pointer did receive more patronage than most other stallions while he was at the stud, it must also be said that his stud life was a good deal shorter than that of most horses, and while he headed the winning sires' list from 1921-22, when ho tied with Wildwood, .Tunr., till 1927-28, his stock still keep him a good second to Nelson Bingen, who was imported in 1914 and is still doing a lot of service in the Auckland . district. Logan Pointer's youngest stock arc seven years old, yet we find them frequently appearing as winners, and Harold Logan, the crack pacer of New Zealand, claims him as n sire.

The Pacing Breed. Logan Pointer was by Star Pointer linin 59Jsec, the first pacer to do a mile in better than two minutes, and this record was made ns far back as 1897. Star Pointer is described as "a big, heavy, bay horse, a typical pacer, descended from a family of pacers," and it is said of Brown Hal, his sire: "There were no trotters from him, becauso he stamped his form upon his progeny." This very strong characteristic was also borne in marked degree by Logan Pointer, whoso stock resemble liini greatly in colour and conformation.* Especially is this the case in the matter of colour, for while thero were 'one or two blacks and a few browns, Logan Pointer docs not secin to have left a chestnut. His stock are mostly bays with lighter hairs running through tho coat, while the mousey nose is a characteristic of the majority. Besides bcinj a great racehorse, Star Pointer who was inbred to the Hal line, was a great and consistent performer. The bicycle sulky first came into use in 1892, and five years later Star Pointer took the record down to lmin 59isec, and this record was held for a long time, for although Dan Patch went' lmin 56} see in 1903, this horse had the big assistance of a windshield, while Star Pointer made his record in the good old-fashioned 'Way. In 1897, bosides establishing his better than two minutes record, Star.Pointer paced nine different miles in 2min 2Jsec or better, and in 1898 he bettered two minutes on four occasions, and equalled his previous best time. , .

Big Race Winners. Logan Pointer is represented by the winner of every important race in New Zealand with the exception of the Auckland Cup, but it was only during the present season that Harold Logan won the biggest race of all, tho New Zealand Cup. Amongst what may be termed the classic races of New Zealand, Logan Pointer sired Childe Pointer and Latona (New Zealand • Sapling Stakes), Acron (Great Northern Derby), Childe Pointer, Acron, ;nnd Native Chief (New Zealand Derby), Logan Chief, Acron (twice), and Native Chief (Eree-for-All), and Childe Pointer, Acron, and Native Chief (Champion Stakes). , In Acron, 2min 3 3-usec, and Native Chief, 2min 4 l-ssec, he left his two most brilliant sprinters, while Logan Chief, *2min 4 2-ssec makes his third pacer to better 2min ssec gfor. a mile, a record held b} no other sire. In Prince Pointer and Harold Logan he had another pair that went a mile and a quarter in 2min 39see, Onyx holds the mile and a half record of 3min 13see, and Harold Logan has a two miles record of 4min 13 2-osec.

All Logan Pointer's stock were move noted for speed than staying powers, and in making this statement the performances of such good two-milers as Harold Logan, Onyx, Prince Pointer, Jewel Pointer, Logan Park, Logan Chief, Loganwood, and Logan Lou are not forgotten. • It .is probable that each was more at home over a njile ifnd a quarter than over the longest ,iournev.

In the course of ten or eleven years Logan Pointer's progeny won over £200,000, r striking commentary on his consistency in siring good class racehOTses.

The Acid Test. A sire's greatness is not altogether measured by the number of his winners, for the quality of breeding-on of his sons and daughters is a very big factor in deciding his greatness or otherwise. So far as his daughters are concerned Logan Pointer's greatness is proved by the success of his mares and during the present season his daughters have left more winners than those of any other sire; Kingcraft by Quincey, Regal "Voyage by Happy Voyage, and Royal Silk by Silk Thread are three of tho most notable performers from mares of this breed. Kempton, White Satin, Tempest, and Grand Canyon by Wrack; Eugene de Oro, Mountain Ore, Chef. Silver de Oro, George Rcy and Location by Rey do Oro; Free Advice, Wind ; shielc and First Flight by Blue Mountain King; Final McKinney by Young McKinney; Erin's Pointer by Travis Axworthy; Dillon Logan by John Dillon; Nella Dillon and Rokena by Author Dillon; Roturn Voyage by Happy Voyage; Gang Awa by Peterwah; Sodium by Great Audubon; Some Guy by Real Guy; Avernus by Nelson Derby;, Ballade by Nelson Bingen; Checkers by

Worthy Bond; and Oxford Queen by Sonoma Harvester are only a few of the numerous winners credited to daughters of Logan Pointer. There seems little doubt that mares of this good pacing breed -will keep ths name of Logan Pointer prominent in light harness circles for many years to come. There may be another story to tell concerning the male progeny of this great sire, for only a few were left entire, and with one or two exceptions, their stock have not raced. Azelzion, who is out of the peerless Thelma, has left at least one winner in Whippet; The Pointer is the sire of Zealous; Desborough produced Molly Desborough and Prince Pointer is the sire of Princess Thea, a promising young pacer. Jewel Pointer is still racing and Acron's first crop of foals are highly spoken of. It is yet much too effrly to discuss the merits of Logan Pointer's sons, as progenitors of speed, but both Jewel Pointer and Prince Pointer, who is now in Tasmania, are well enough bred on the dam's side and were good enough racehorses to merit the attention, of breeders.
