PERSONAL. (SPECIAL TO THK PBE9S.) GREYMOUTH, March 14. Sir D. Jackson . (Christchurch) is visiting friends in Greymouth. Mr A. Kibble, editor of the "Orey Evening Star," who has been visiting Auckland, returned on Saturday. Mr M. Daly, editor of the j River Argus," who has been visiting j Rotorua, has returned to Greymouth. The Rev. Father O'Meeghan, who has been on an extended holiday abroad, will return to Aliaura this week. Miss P. Robertson, who has been visiting friends in Greymouth, returned on Saturday to Auckland. Mr E. D. Orr, who has been appointed railway stationmaster at Blenheim, and Mrs Orr were entertained on Friday eveuing by the Bible Class boys and girls of ll'oly Trinity Church, and presented with a seagrass chair and bush ion. Obituary. An old West Coast identity, Mr Robert Stewart, died on Saturday. He was in his 90th year and was the oldest brewer in the Dominion. He was a native of Shetland Islands and arrived in New Zealand in 1865, going to Hokitika. He was formerly brewer for Mr T. G. McCarthy. In 1879 he came to Greymouth and established a brewery business, which he carried on till his death. He is survived by six sons and tjiree daughters. The death occurred at the Buller Hospital, Westport, on Friday of Mr Stephen Joyce, aged 60. He was a native of Addison's Flat and lived in 'the district all his life with the exception of a short period at Kalgoorlie. He is survived by his widow arid two sons and six daughters. The death occurred at Hokitika on Friday afternoon of Mrs Frances Webb in her 50th year. Mrs Webb is survived by two sons and two daughters. The death occurred at Hokitika on Saturday evening of Mr Daniel Dooling, an old resident of Westland, aged 82. He was a native of County Kerry, Ireland, and had followed mining on the Ross and Kumara goldfields. He is survived by his widow, one son, and five daughters. Ladies' Guild. At the annual meeting of ■ Holy Trinity Ladies' Guild the f6llowing were elected for the ensuing year: President, Mr« L. Mercer; vice-presi-dents, Mrs H. Herring and Miss J. Sotlieran; secretary. Mis A. Mosley; treasurer, Mrs W. Phillips; committee, Mesdames R. I.each, Roach, Brown, Miller, Hansen, and Miss A. Pratt. ! Croquet. On Saturday a club match was played between the Makura and Runanga Croquet Clubs at the Makura Club's lawn. The results were (Runanga mentioned first): —Mesdames Timlin and O'Loughlin lost to Mesdames P. Hambleton and W. Phillips, 22-26; Mesdames Rose and Erickson beat Mesdames E. Warnes and J. Robertson, 2621; Mesdames Wilson and McCracken beat Mesdames Coburn and Haglund, 20-18. Bowling. The Runanga Bowling Club completed its championships yesterday, when the pairs winners were Speakman and Taylor; the club's pairs winners were Armstrong and King; singles, i.. Leach; handicap singles, L. Pattinson. At Hokitika on Saturday a Greymouth team met tho Hokitika team in play for tho Reynolds badges, held by Greymouth. The badges were retained by Mercer's rink. Greymouth scored 94 and Ilokitika 82. A Greymouth team journeyed to Waiuta yesterday for a friendly match, when the former team won by 61 to 54 on points, Waiuta, however, winning two games out of the three rinks played. Rifle Shooting. A triangular match was held yesterday at the Ruru range between Grey Defence, Lake Brunuer and Brunnerton Rifle Clubs. Grey were winners with an Defence, Lake Brunner, and Brunnerton 627, and Brunnerton 604. For Grey Club the top scorers were Riflemen S. Sharman 94, G. Joyce 89, and H. Iliggins 82. For Lnkc Bruiiiier, Riflemen C. Kennedy 85, P. Henney 83, and F, Feary 83, were the highest, and for Brunnerton the best were Riflemen F. Williams 84, G. Smith 84, and C. Buckman 83. " Cricket. Yesterday's cricket fixtures were played in brilliant weather With grounds in splendid order. In the A Division, Marist secured ati easy win over United B, hitherto the leaders in the competition, by six wickets on the first innings. Marist scored 195 for four wickets (Morris not out, 108, Matthews 36), and United scored 160 (Scott, not out., 43, Gilbert 18). United A defeated Cobden A by 58 runs on the first innings. United scored 138 (Spender 36, Casey 2.9), and Cobden scored 80 (Mcintosh 15, Howes 10). Star had a meritorious win for three points over Runanga, at Omoto, creating a retord for their club by scoring 263 for seven wickets in their first innings. For Star Cooper 70, Mosley 53, Kerr 43, and Nelson 24, were the chief scorers. In Runanga's first innings they scored 77 (Tinlin 29, MeTaggart 17, not out), and in the second innings 133 (Smithson 55, Greening 08, not out). In the B Division, Kumara bent Camerons by a comfortable margin, winning a three-pointer. Kumara made 145 (McGrath 32, A'Court 24). Camerons scored. 99 (Ogilvie 36) in their. first . strike, and 71 (Ogilvie 32) in their second strike. Kumara, requiring only 25 runs, went back to the wickets and compiled 29 for two wickets (McGrath 24). Fire Brigade. %. The Hokitika Fire Brigade held a series of competitions among its members on Saturday, when some good exhibitions were given and fast times recorded. The one-man event was won by Fireman B. Lakin, G. Kennedy 2, 'H. Thompson 3. Three-men event, draw for places: P. Ross, M. Davidson, and H. Preston 1. Two-men event: 11. Steel and J. Mcintosh 1, Depijty-Superintendent Ross and 'II. Preston 2, C. Preston and E. Lakin 3. In the evening the trophies and medals were presented. / Football. The annual meeting of the Westland Football Association was held on Saturday evening, when all the West , Coast Association Clubs were represeut- | ed.
