La Trobe, assistant-director of Education, paid a visit to the Ashburton Technical School yesterday, where he discussed the question of accommodation with the executive of the Board of Managers. Attributing his bankruptcy to the general depression resulting in the falling off of luxury lines and the consequent small amount received 5n commissions bankrupt .filed his statement showecT that he started business as agent for Warre, Hockley, and Co., in 1928, later taking over agencies from various breweries. He executed a fair amount of business, but found that profits were insufficient to meet overhead expenses. In 1930 .he was fined substantially for not handling goods in a proper manner. He was married with a family of three and could make no offer. The financial statement showed that there was a deficiency of £484 10s 3d. The amount owing to unsecured creditors was £539 10s 3d, against which there were book debts estimated to produce £lO and furniture valued at £45. Quinnat Salmon Fishing, Good results were obtained by Ashburton anglers who visited the mouth of the Rakala river at the week-end Mr F. Crura landed 10 salmon, the heaviest being 251b, while Mr E. Millichamp obtained eleven. Mr W. ,Excell of Nightcaps, made the heaviest catch of 361b among a bag of six. Fishermen at the Rangitata river mouth were not so fortunate, however, only six fish being caught all day on Sunday, Mr F„ Holland obtained four salmon upstream. Cricket Association. The Management Committee of the Ashburton Cricket Association-met last evening, when the president, Mr B. H, Biggar, presided. . The South Canterbury Cricket Association advised that it would be able to play Ashburton senior, junior, and third grade representative teams at Timaru on Easter Saturday. The South

Canterbury Association also advised that a match between the winners of its senior competition and the A.ahbwrton senior competition for the Bristol cup, could be played on March 19th. The secretary stated- that had advised the South Canterbury Aisociation that the Fairfield team would visit Timaru on the date named. The Canterbury Association advised that it would send a third grade team to play an Ashburton junior team on Easter Monday. It was decided to make a grant , of i£s towards the cost pf transporting the representative team. v . It was decided that Kia Ora, the winner of the junior competition, play an eleven selected from the other teams in the junior , grade, and that the .combined Ashburton team play a team from the other senior club Saturday. High School was granted permiwion to play their annual matcK with Timaju •High School, at Timaru, to-day. The following have been selected to play Kia Ora on Saturday:—W. Aitoheeon (captain), W. Sharplin (High School), I>. Porter (Technical). METHVEN. Members jof the Methven Railway staff met on Friday evening to bid farewell to Mr J. OsbQrne, formerly ganger at. Methven, on the occasion ed his retirement on superannuation. Mr Geo. Beary presided and referred to Mr Osborne's 33 years of servfee to the Department, 23 yearg of which had been spent in Methven. On behalf at the staff, he presented Mr Osborne with a case of Loewe pipes and a. tobacco pouch. Messrs KeUeher, King, Whalley, Guthrie, Carr, Dwyer, Scott, Walker. Grainger, and Lawrence, also expressed their regret at tho departure of Mr Osborne. Mr Osborne returned thanks. Harvest thanksgiving services were conducted in Highbank and Methven on Sunday, In the evening, the Rev, H. T. York, of Riccartoa, took the service at St. ~Saviour's, Highbank. The church was decorated. At All Saints Church, Methven, Mr York took the morning .service, and the vicar, the Rev. E. Osmers, conducted the service in the evening. The church was decorated and there was a good display of fruit, vegetables, and flowers at both churches. These gifts will be sent on to St. Sav-. iour's orphanages. The Methven. branch of the Plunket Society held their annual appeal on Friday in the Town Hall. An assortment of gifts of needlework and homeand farm produce had been sent in and these were disposed of during the day. In the evening a concert was given by the Ashburton Musical Club. Afterwards a dance was held music being supplied by Cook's Orchestra. Extras were played by Miss E. Woods and Mr D. Petrie. Mr W. R. Owers wa.s M.C. The stall-holders at the. sale of gifts and produce were:—Produce stall: Mesdames w. J. Owen and G. R. Cleevej fancy work: Mesdames E. A. Bland, L. L. Aitken, and H. Reid; cake stall: Mesdames J. R. Daltbn and jno. Watson; nut and fruit; Meadamee D. Chambers, tr. Johns, and J. Goodwin, jun; luncheon and tea booth: Mrs J. Wootton in charge. The Bowling Club's singles championship competition was concluded on Saturday afternoon, when H E jThomson defeated A. E.
