^ —. i RANGIORA. The Eangiora Presbyterian Church was decorated for the harvest thaulcsgiving services held yesterday, and there was a large display of gifts for the Prosbyterian Orphanages at Christchurch. The Bev. W. E. Hutchison conducted tho morning service and at the evening service the Eev. J. Eobertson, of Cashmere, occupied the pulpit. Special harvest thanksgiving services were also held by the Salvation Army yesterday. The hall was decorated and there was a good display of fruits and vegetables. The services were wcl! attended. Tonight there will be a special musical evening, and the programme will be given by the Methodist Church Choir. The gifts of produce will be sold in aid of the Army funds. Large congregations attended r.ha harvest thanksgiving services at St. John's Church yesterday. There was a good display of the fruits of the soil, and these, with the gifts- brought by the children to the morning service, are to be sent to Rt. .Saviour's Orphanage. The Rev. A. C. Purchn.s preached at both services. A friendly bowling match ol' four rinks was played on the Eangiora green on Saturday afternoon between the ! Eangiora" Club and Aulsebrook'a, the ! game ending in a draw, each side scoring two wins. In thanking tho Kangiora Club for the pleasant afternoon spent, Mr E. Chapman, president of the Aulsebrook's Club stated that in order to make the event an annual one he would present a trophy for competition. The offer was accepted with cheors from both clubs. The result of the games were (Rangiora first):— Banfield 33, Plummcr 13; Doggott 15, Chapman 20; Bailey 18, Brown 20; Benjes 21, Clarke 12; points, Eangiora 87, Aulebrook's 65; games, Rangiora 2, Aulsebrook's 2. On Friday evening, the staff of the New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Association met to say farewell to their accountant, Mr W. A. McKinncy, who is leaving the Rangiora branch on his promotion to the managership of the Oxford branch. Supper was provided by Mrs Ager, after which the manager, Mr F. T. Ager, on behalf of those present, congratulated Mr McKinney on his promition, and presented him with a fountain peu and an Eversharp pencil. Mr Stanton (auction department), Mr Scott (grocery department), and Mr Hargreaves (drapery department) also spoke. Mr McKinney suitably responded. Opportunity was also taken to sayfarewell to Miss Ida Hurley, of the drapery staff, who is leaving the cmploy of the firm. Mr Ager, after wishing Miss Hurley every happiness in tho future, presented her with a china tea set, the gift of the members of the whole staff. Miss Hurley returned thanks. KAIAPOI. The Kaiapoi Beautifying Association held its annual carnival in the Kaiapoi Itomain on Saturday afternoon. The proceedings commenced with a procession, which formed in Hilton street and proved a great attraction. Headed by the Kaiapoi Band, it included decorated cars, ponies, bicycles, and lorries carrying passengers in carnival costume, the principal displays being the tableaux by the Presbyterian Girls' Sunshine Club, depicting the sun shining on all nationalities. "The Old Woman who Lived in a Shoe" was also well carried out. At the Domain the judging of the various classes of decorated cars, costumes, etc., took place, the judges being Dr. and Mrs M. Aiken and Mr and Mrs G. E. March, of Rangiora. The awards were as follows: —Young people's display: Presbyterian Sunshine Girls' Club, 1. Decoi-ated, car: Mr J. Gordon 1, "Old Woman who Lived in a Shoe." . Decorated bicycle: Rosemary Elder and Valerie Simpson (equal) 1. Prettiest costume: Anne Ramsay and Elsie Taylor (equal) 1. Decorated pony: Kitty Coup 1. Novelty costume (White Leghorn Hen and Rooster), E. and Y. Hutchinson, 1. A musical chair competition on ponies was won by R. Clarke, T. Coup being second. Other competitions were won by Messrs T. Bntio, F. Bowring, J. Borell, and M. Giles. During the afternoou exhibitions ot classical dancing were given by' Miss Manhiro's pupils and folk dancing by members of the Christchurcli W.E.A. The prizes won in connexion with the Association's garden competition were presented hv the president. Mr J. Hirst, as follows:—First prize, Trousselot rose bowl, Mrs E. Baker; second prize, Mr G. Dixon. KAIKOURA. A pleasant function took place at the band room on Friday night in celebration of the anniversary of Mrs Nellie Pluck's birthday. The cake was made by the guest of the evening and was illuminated with 12 candles. Misses Nellie Pluck and Chrissie Clemett danced Irish Jigs,- Misses. D. Pluck and M. Clemett accompanying, and Mrs Pluck gave a mandolin eolo. The evening was spent in games and dancing. AKAROA. The result of the Akaroa Croquet Club's Handicap Doubles was as follows: —Mesdames R. L. Paterson and H. N. Wright 26, Mesdames A. V. Lelievre and W; B. Ramsay 21. The Championship Singles of the Akaroa Bowling Club are nearing completion, and the latest results are:—C. Petterson 24, 8. W. Hay ward 23, A. E. Kingston 16, A. G. Shuttleworth 10, S.- W. Hayward 20, and A. F. C. Williamson 6. Petterson has two lives, and Kingston and Hayward one eaph. Mr W. H. Candy, who is leaving Akaroa, was met by the members ot the" Football Club, and was the recipient of a present from the club. A meeting of the Scout Committee was held on Thursday. The president, Mr G. Armstrong, presided over- a good attendance. , . The Metropolitan Commissioner notified that a levy of Is each tor ° u » s and Scouts was now payable. ' „ , , , Mrs R. G. Keith and her daughter are spending a holiday at Sumner. RUSSELL'S FLAT. There was a good attendance at the recent fortnightly social and dance.
