The return of beautiful Constance Bennett in "The Common Law," the film adaptation of Robert Chambers's famous novel, should ba welcome to those who like a story of modern sophistication, well written and exceedingly well acted. A large audience greeted the opening screening on Saturday night with enthusiasm, for '"Tho Common Law" is certainly one of the best pictures seen in Christchurch for a long time. Joel Mcltea, Miss Bennett's leading man, hus easily the finest role of his career, as the young American artist who falls in love with his model, and Low Cody, tho genial roue of a luxurious bachelor apartment in Paris, has a part which suits him down to the ground. The story, a daring one, dealing With some aspects of the, modern idea of love, tells of the romance botween two Americans in Paris, and the difficulties cast in the way by the appearance of past loves and former intrigues. Tho screoning is lavish, and tho scenes of Paris night life and the luxury aboard a wealthy American's private yacht -give an insight into the way much money is spent by some of thoso who can afford it.
