RELIEVING DISTRESS.
STREET COLLECTION ON FRIDAY. A street collection, to be made on Friday, will be on behalf of the fund established by the Mayor for the relief of distress in the City, and so well has the appeal been organised that it is expected to result in the collectjon of - a sum well over £IOOO. The organisers are confident that, in the worthiness ot the cause, lies a very;strong appeal to everyone in the City. A great need exists for the establishment of a large fund to assist the many destitute families through the winter, the committee organising the collection states". The Mayor's Fund has already been ithe means of giving relief to hundreds of men, women, and children, but it is realised that the number needingassistance during the coming- winter will increase, and that the fund mast be placed on'a sound basis.- -> TJb'e" committee hopes to he able to acquaint.the public of Christchurch with the real need there is for a record response to their appeal on Saturday. : POLITICAL LEADERS TO HELP. The MayoT of Christchurch (Mr.D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) has arranged with , the Prime Minister,, the Minister for j Public Works, (the' Rt. Hon. J. G. ! Coates), and the Leader of the Opposition (Mr H, E. "Holland,-M.P.L to speak over the radio to .the people of Christchurch on the night of Thursday, March 17th, in. support} of the street collection effort to be made on March 18th, in aid of the Mayor's Fund, and to assist the All Nations Fair being promoted for the same purpose. ■" All of the leaders willingly acceded to theMayor's request to assist. Mr _ Sullivan will also speak from Wellington' the same evening.
