TIDES. It will be high tide at 8.05 a.m. and 8.23 p.m. on the beach to-day, and a.m. and 9.07 p.m. in tho river. To-morrow: 8.41 a.m. and 8.59 p.m. on the beach, and 9.25 a.m. and Xio p.m. in the river. St. Faith's Church. The Anglican Church presented a bright appearance last Sunday on occasion of the harvest festival scimc . The vicar (tho Rev. T. N. Cumow) preached to large congregations m fit morning and evening. Methodist Church. The harvest festival services at the New Brighton Methodist Church wer held last Sunday, and continued n Monday. The church was decorated, and tnere were many offerings of fruit and vege tables. The church was well filled at all services, the Rev. S. Bailey ( e pastor) officiating. Solos were sung _ y Mrs T. Chapman and Mr B. Bernstein. The choir contributed two anthems. On Monday community singing was held, after whiSh the produce was sold and realised a good price, tho proceeds going to the Church Trust Account. Bowling. In the challengo for tho Grecnslade Ferns, Cuff, Holloway, Barrett, and Muirson beat Lawrence, Watson, McCrec, and 11. A. Bishop. The final of the Williams Shield will be played next week, the teams being Dean, Matson, Holloway, and Bisinan, versus Skipworth, L. Lawrence, Evans, and Hooker. In tho champion of champions' rink match against Sydenham, played last Saturday, Besley's rinlo put up a good game, but could not produce their usual form. New Brighton bowlers are keenly interested in the progress of the games for the Maddison trophy, which was won by J. S. Martin (Sumner) last year. On Thursday last Martin was defeated in the third round, while J. T. Bisman (New Brighton) played unbeaten through the three rounds and enters the semi-finals. Inter-Borough Sports. Although not yet definitely fixed, it appears probable that the annual interborough sports between Sumner and New Brighton will take place in New Brighton on April 2nd. Surf Club. The competitions for the Wigrain Rose Bowl, to be held under the control of the New Brighton Surf Club this afternoon, should prove most interesting. The four-men alarm event is open to schoolboys and members of tho club who are eligible to compete in the Benson Shield. The boys are very keen, 13 teams having entered. After the decision of the competition entrants and their parents will be entertained to afternoon tea by members of the Surf Club. Library. The number of books that have been added to the shelves of tho New Brighton Free Library during the past twelve months is 398. Card Evenings. Tiiei'c was a good attendance on Thursday at tho weekly whist evening, held in aid of the funds of the New Brighton Free Kindergarten. Prizewinners were Mrs R. Bach and Messrs E. W. Chadwick and R. Lutin. Unemployment. The number of unemployed men registered in tho borough remains fairly* steady, although thore is a slight increase this week as compared with a month ago, the figures being 212 this week as against 20C in Februarv. Construction Work. Men employed under the No 5 Scheme liavo been engaged widening the Brighton side of Beach road, and are approaching the junction of Britannia street. The manuka barricades being erected on the foreshore between the North Beach Surf Club and Beach road will assist in preventing sand from drifting on to the Esplanade roadway. Several large-sized poplar roots which have caused the continual breaking up of asphalt paths have been dug up. South Brighton. Further progress has been made in the formation of Sturdee street, and if; is understood that as a result one section owner has decided to build on his section. « Footpath formation has started in Pino avenue, between Bridge street and Sturdee street. Pleasant Point Domain and Jcllicoe Reserve are now receiving attention with a view to tree planting during tho coming winter. | South Brighton Gala. At the final meeting of tho South Brighton Gala Committee, held on Wednesday, Mr W. J. Orsborn presided over a good attendance. The net -profit from the two days' gala held at Pleasant Point on New Year's Uay and in Central Brighton on January 2nd, was £47 12s 9d, which, allocated on the percentage basis already agreed upon, gave to the New Brighton Band, £23 16s to tho South Brighton Surf Club £l7 17s 3£d, and to the South Brighton Progress League £5 19s Id. It was pointed' out that the profit would have been considerably higher had not the late afternoon and tho evening of New Year's Day been wot, which precluded tho opening of the gala jn Central Brighton in the evening, as had been arranged. Belief Committee. Reports on the steps already taken to relieve distress in the Borough of New will be brought forward at the public meeting convened by the Mayor OMr E. A. M. Leaver) on Tuesday next. Mardi Gras. The Mardi Gras festivities have ceased until Saturday next, when an Easter Gala will be started by the Now Brighton Band for the benefit of the New Brighton Relief Committee. Rawhiti Golf Club. A meeting of tho executive of the Rawliifci Golf Club was held on Thursday, when there were present Mr 11. Throp (club captain, in the chair), Mr G. W. Bishop (president), Mr A. B. G. Lyttle (vice-president), and Messrs C. A. Cooper, H. G. Lyttle, B. T. Coburn, L. W. Bexley, Mrs B. T. Miles, Miss A. Riedle, and Mr J. E. Gudge on (secretary). After discussion on the local rules as to the picking and dropping, it was de-

cidcd to allow members to place within a radius of one foot on all fairways as an experiment, to extend over one month. , v The match programme for the season was drawn up and approved. Mr Harold Throp was appointed the club's' delegate to the Municipal Golf Links Advisory Board's meeting on Tuesday next, with a view to fixing the opening date, and in the matter of a links' professional being engaged. It was decided to hold a mixed foursome over 18 holes on opening day. Mr M. P. Corliss offered a trophy for annual competition. The offe* was accepted with thanks. NORTH BEACH. The Schools. On Wednesday tho teachers of the North Beach, together with the staffs of the Main Brighton, Aranui, and Burwood Schools, underwent a day's instruction in the new system of physical instruction as laid down in the new book written by Dr. Renfrew White. The women's class was in charge of? Miss Greenwood, and the men's class was in charge of Mr Webb. Tennis. As a result of the dry climate of North Beach, the doubles for the North Otago versus Canterbury intcrprovincial match were played on the North Beach Tennis Club's courts. The members of the club were fortunate in being able to "view such fine tennis on their homo courts. The inter-borough tennis match will probably bo played on April 2nd. Life-saving. The last of the Canterbury Surf Association's surf life-saving competitions for this season will be held at South Brighton oh Sunday afternoon next. The competition/a four-man alarm rescue without ballot, is fbr the North Beach Gala Cup. This contest also decides the Canterbury champion beltman. The North Beach Surf Club has entered two teamß, the aspirants to beltman championship honours being A. T. Dalton and D. H. Symes. The teams supporting them will bo selected from C. B. Kiordan, V. G. Spiller, A. L. Taylor, ,T. O. Hattersley, P. F. L. Scott, and J. McDonald. North Beach Club proposed to hold its club competitions on Sunday morning. These will consist of the Wctod Cup, a seven-man rescue, and the Ward Clip, a four-man rescue. North Brighton School. 'J lie monthly meeting of tlio North Brighton School Committee was held at the school. Present: Messrs A. Floranee (chairman), W. S. Bussell, A. H. Henry, A. Jones, R. H. Mahan, F. >S. Norrie, JjF. Uren, S. S. Freeborn, and 1I • Roohfort (headmaster). On the motion of the chairman, a. vote of sympathy was extended to Mr and Mrs C. T. Middle ton in the death of their son. The "headmaster's report showed > e roll number as 285. with an average attendance of 251. since the school reopened after the holidays. The chairman reported on the work being done on the Osborne terrace sports ground, and appreciation "as expressed by members of the progress and improvements made under the No. 5 Unemployment Scheme by the Council. The painting of the school has now been completed. Messrs Jones and Mahnn were appointed a visiting committee for the month.
