NORTH CANTERBURY DISTRICT. i ANNUAL CONFERENCE. The sixty-ninth annual conference of the Manchester Unity Oddfellows, North Canterbury District, was held yesterday in the Unity Hall. Grand Master's Address. | The Grand Master, addressing the assembled delegates, said there was cause for deep gratification in the fact \ that the district had gained in membership and made further financial progress. After a record increase during the previous year the total adult membership of the district at December 31st, 1930, stood at 2873. During the past year there was a net gain of 25 members, making the total membership 2898. The total amount of sick pay during the year was £4194 16s 6d, funeral benefits £B9O, and maternity claims 810. Financially a net gain of £5952 was recorded, and the total worth of the district on December Ist, 1931, was £110,078. Eeferring to the difficulties of the times, the Grand Master said that all of them had been called upon to make sacrifices, and some of their members were in need. With a view to relieving distress amongst their own members, caused .through unemployment, lodges had been circularised and asked to forward particulars of unemployed members to the district office. Proposals so far were only tentative, but the claims of their less fortunate members were urgent, and something could and should bo done. Election, of Officers. Menneer was nominated for the position of director of the ftew Zealand branch, LYTTELTON DISTRICT. ANNUAL MEETING. The seventy-ninth annual meeting of the Lyttelton District, M.U., '1.0.0. F., was held in the Oddfejlows' liall, Lyttcltou, on Thursday night, when the Grand Master, Bro. P. Haglund, presided over a full attendance of members and visitors. 1 Deputies from the various Lodges were present as follows :—Kaia Toa: L'.G.'s, Sisters M. Nystram and G. E. le Comte; Perseverance: P.G.'s S H. Rhodes and A. McKay, and N.G. Bro, G. le Valliant; Good Intent: P.P.G.M. Bro. C. VV. Leote, and P.G. Sister C. Fyfe; Hand and Heart: P.G. Bro. R. W. Kelly; Hand of Friendship: P.P.G.M. Uro. G. Harris and P.G. Sister C. Boleyn, Deputy Prov. G.M. Sister M. A. Ryder, Prov. C.S. Bro. W. T. Foster, I.P.P.G.M. Bro. H. W. Ryder and the Warden Sister J. Gilray. Visitors present were P.P.G.M.'s Bros. John Taylor, L. A. Graham, P.G. Bro. J. Reynish, the N.G. of the Hand and Heart Lodge, Bro. S. Reynisli, Bro. Turpin. Sister R. Duff, P.G. Sister Kayes, and P.G. Bro. J. H. Williams. P.G. Sister M. Nystfcam, on behalt of the Loyal Kaia Toa Lodge, whicii had charge of the arrangements for the district meeting, welcomed the dele- ' gates and visitors. The balance-sheet showed that the funds of the district generally had in creased. It was announced that a record was reached by the sickness experienced during the past year, £1552 being paid out foi 1 sick pay. The Deputy Prov. G.M. Sister, M. A. Ryder, was elected to the position of Provincial Grand Master of the dis trict, a position which she is the first Sister in New Zealand to occupy. There were four nominations for the office of Deputy Prov. G.M., and i'.G. Bro. R. W. ]£elly, of the Hand ftnd i Heart Lodge, was elected. i P.P.G.M. Bro. W. G. G. Taylor were re-elected book oxj ammers. | Permission was gi anted to the Peninsula Lodges to pay sick pay on nick visitors' certificates. It _ was decided that the place of meeting in 1933 be at Pigeon Bay ft the Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge. P-G. Sister C. Boleyn, of the Loyal | Hand of Friendship Lodge, congratulated bister Ryder on attaining the Grand Master's Chair, as not only the first Sister in the Lyttelton District, but, she believed, the first Sister i ll New Zealand to occupy that position. a Past Provincial Grand Master's jewel and certificate, to which Bro. Haglund suitably replied. The district officers, visiting members, delegates and friends were entertained at a dance in the Oddfellows' Hall, where there was a very large attendance. The presiding officers of the Loyal Good Intent, Loyal Kaia Toa, City of Norwich, Hand of Friendship and Perseverance Lodges were present. The visitors present were I.P.N.G. Sister Ole Comte, of the Sister Pearce Lodge, and Sister Turpin, P.P.G.M. Bro. P. Maurice, of the Loyal Phillipstown Lodge, and Sister H. Oldman of Loval Waiau Lodge. The M.C.'s were IfLG.'sA. A. Kayes, S. E. Martin, and It. T. Ings and Bros. J. Wyatt and H. McDonald, assisted by Mr Huston, supplied the music. Figures quoted at the meeting showed, that the total value of the funds of all Lodges in the district was £31.091 17s Bd, and with the value of the district funds. -£34,665 lis 9clThe total membership was 882 on November 30th, as against 865 for 1930.
