Reminders. Acceptances for the "W'estport Jockey Club's Annual Meeting arc due ;it 9 p.m. on Monday. Nominations for the Greymoutli (9 p.m.) and Kumara (10 p.m.) Meetings close on Monday, and for the W'rslland Meeting r.t B..'!<J p.m. on Thursday. A Lflcky Purchase. The well-known southern trainer, W. .Stone, recently decided to try his luck in the North Island, and made a favourable start by purchasing the three-year-old chestnut filly Alpinist, by Gainscourt from Mountain Lass, at a iigure in the vicinity of 50 guineas. Alpinist, carrying Stone's colours, won the Tahoraite .Haek Handicap, of 50 sovs, on the first day at Dannevirke this week, and ran second the next day. Stone has not definitely decided where lie will establish his headquarters, but in the meantime has taken a couple of boxes at Awapuni, and'hopes soon to get another team together. Steeplechase Candidate. Claremore was allotted his first schooling task at Ellesmere on Tuesday, since joining J. C. Lambess's stable, and jumped 'four hurdles well. Not Serious. Palace evidently Boon threw oft the effects of the splint trouble which he is stated to have contracted after his arrival at Takanini, as on Tuesday last, with H. Gray in the saddle, he reeled off half a mile, in company with Innuendo, in 50, l-sscc. St. Zieger Stakes. The field for the New Zealand St. Leger Stakes to»be decided at Trentham on Thursday will be fairly strong • numerically, but the majority of those remaining in the list havo few credentials for tackling a mile and threequarters' journey. With Bronze Eagle out of the way Petc-r Jackson looks the most likely. He was third in the New Zealand Derby and second in the Ellerslie event, while he rail fourth in the Auckland Cup. On February 27th, he accounted for the Herries Memorial Cup at Te Aroha, this extending over a luile and three furlongs, so lie must be .at hia best just now. Fiji promised w.ell when he followed Bronze Eagle home in the New Zealand Derby, but he failed at Auckland. Fast Passage and Azalea will probably be the only Soutli Islanders engaged. The former ran a good second in the New Zealand Oaks, and should master the St. Leger journey, while Azalea has encouraging performances of late over a mile and a quarter. View Halloo, King Colossus, and Esteem have done fairly well this season, and the final issue may rest between Peter Jackson, View Halloo, and Fiji. Recovering. D. Cotton, who was injured at Motukarara on Saturday last, is still an inmate of the Christchurch Hospital, but his condition yesterday was repoj-ted to be very satisfactory. An Impressive Gallop. Bronze Eagle (A. Craig) and Huntingdon (H. Gray), were responsible for a brilliant effort over six furlongs at Takanini on Tuesday. They went fast to the .three furlongs in 36sec and finished up with Bronze Eagle .just in front in lmin 14sec. Huntingdon was under a strong pull at the finish and his effort was particularly pleasing as he had the worse of the weights. Advice froin, Auckland yesterday stated that Bronze Eagle went ainias after the gallop and will not be taken to Trentham. Auckland Classics. Tlio committee of the Auckland Racing Club this week considered the stakes to be given in connexion with, future classic events, entries for which close on June' 10th, and it was decided ; that the prize-money should be as follows, the Hoyal Stakes being the only race in which a reduction was not made: Future. Former. Sovs. Sovs. AVelconie Stakes .. 500 650 G.N. Foal Stakes .. 750 1,000 ltoyal Stakes .. 500 500 Champagne Stakes .. 000 750 Great Northern Guineas 000 750 Great Northern Derby 1,250 1,750 Great Northern Oaks .. -100 500 Great Northern St. Leger 450 550
Of New Zealand Interest. It may be wondered why the tableman thought it worth while to make special mention of Agincourt's success in the Granville Novice Kace at KoseJiill (Sydnev) on Saturday last. Possibly it was because this four-year-old filly i_ s owned by Mr J. J. Leahy, well known as a liberal buyer of New Zealand thoroughbred*. On the other hand, it ,nav have been because Agincourt is from the Martian—Edna May mare I Battle Seene, who raced in the Doi minion with considerable success in the ! colours of Mr G. Fulton, among her wins i being the Great Easter Handicap of j 1023. It was shortly after this that ' she was sold for Australia. j Arrant Failures. j When the Aga Khan gave oHOOgns for Ganga Singh (Spiori Kop—Rackety Coo) and 14,000gns for Aftab (Papyrus —Sundart) in England as yearlings," their prices suggested the possibility of both making first-class racehorses. Neither fulfilled expectations, Gunga Singh finally being sold for USOgns and Aftab for 125gns. Strangely enough, they met in a Maiden Hurdle Eace, of 83 sovs, at Birmingham recently. Aftab, who was favourite, finished sixth in a field of eleven, and Ganga Singh won. It was his first run over the hurdles, and his place was quoted at double figures But what an ending for such high-priced yearlings. Okawa. Gallopers. Monarchy, who won two one iliile races at the recent Napier Park Meeting, has proved himself a good sort this season, being out of the money only twice in nine starts. He finished second in the Trial Handicap, six furlongs, at Napier Park in the spring, and won the Novice Stakes at Waipawa. He was runner-up in mile races on two occasions at Poverty Bay, and won the Ilastings Handicap, six furlongs and a half, at Hawke's Bay. Monarchy is a thrce-year-oKI colt by Chief Ruler from Bonny Briar, and is a brother to Briar lioot. He is engaged at tho Arckland Autumn Meeting. Courtyard, a stable-mate of Monarchy, and winner of the Kuao Handicap at Napier Tark last Saturday, is a f tvo-yrar-old gelding by Grandcourt from First Blow, and is therefore a brother to Second Wind, winner of the King's Cup, recently decided at Hobart, and other important races in Australia. Earlier in the season Courtyard won a juvenile event at the Hawke's Bay Meeting, and is regarded as a highly promising youngster. Since winning at Napier Park last week negotiations have been made for the purchase of Courtyard, and if the sale eventuates he will probably do his future racing in Australia. Riccarton at Easter. The principal handicaps at the Canterbury Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting look like providing strong fields. Eight horses have dropped out of the Great Easter, the withdrawals being Cimabue, Chrysology, Solmar, Korokio, Moa j Bird, Esteem, Fair Weather, and Azalea, and the twenty-two who remain should provide a fine contest. Of twenty-three horses nominated for the Great Autumn, ! Boyal Love, Korokio, Esteem, and Azalea have gone out, and here again there is material for a good race. Last | year there were,twenty-one in the Great Easter, and thirteen in the Great Autumn. | The minor events have all filled well. The following tables gives a comparison with the entries for last year:—
The Kildare and Peerswick Handicaps were hurdle events last year, while this year they are high-weight races.
Reminders. dominations for the trotting events on the Greymouth J.C.'s programme close on Monday at 9 p.m. On the same day, at 10 p.m., nominations close for the trotting events at Kumara. Acceptances for the trotting events at the Westport J.C.'s Meeting close at 9 p.m. on Monday. « To-day's Railway.Arrangements. 1 In connexion with the Trotting Meeting to be held at Timaru to-day, a special passenger train will leave Christchurch' at 7.42 a.m., arriving at Timaru at a.m. The return train will leave Timaru at 6 p.m., and will arrive in Christchurch at 9.22 p.m. The 8.35 a.m. Christchurch-Invercargill express will stop if required to set ddwn passengers at Washdykc, where a special train will convey them to the racecourse. ' Canterbury Horses in the North. C. S. Donald and M. B. Edwards will bo represented at the South Wairarapa Meeting to-day, the former by Sandown and the latter by Silver de Oro and Historian. Sandown and Silver de Oro are engaged in the chief event, the Mangapari Handicap. South Wairarapa Meeting. At the South Wairarapa Meeting to be held to-day, the following horses are expected to race prominently in their engagements:—Martinborough Handicap: Wisteria, David McElwyn; Taratahi Handicap: Amy Etawah, Aerial Boy; Carterton Handicap: Mihad, Native Berry; Mangapari Handicap: Sandown, Silver de Oro; Featherston Handicap: Bara Gold, Historian; Stewards' Handicap: Hardy Grattan, Lucky Voyage; Greytown Handicap: Huia Maid, Teri Kingi; Final Handicap: Silver de Oro, Poi. Another Coast Performer. Royal Drusus, who, in his only start in Canterbury proved that .West Coast form compared quite favourably with that on this side of the ranges, has ] paved the way for another Coaster .n 0 the three-year-old colt, Travis Thome, whose name figures among the nominations for the Welcome Handicap for three-year-olds, to be decided at the Addington Easter Meeting. Travis Thome has shown very promising form in the racing he has had on the Coast. Brackets at Timaru. N Brackets on the totalisator at Timaru < to-day are as follows:—Trial Handicap: Evening Sun and Sunbrown; Timaru Cup: Major Lind and Colonial Boy. 1 Grand Canyon and Sunny Bob; Fairlic Handicap: Sister Rose and Tini Uria; ; Washdyke . Handicap: Royal Comrade j and Daphne do Oro; "Wai-iti Handicap: j Lord Antrim, Lady Antrim, and Needles. J
A Good Recovery. Princess Mauritius has made a got"! recovery from the injuries she received two weeks ago, and is once again pacing freely in her work. From Auckland. Included in the nominations lor the events for unhoppled trotters at the Easter Meeting is the Australian-bred gelding Yalloden, who has done all his racing in the Auckland province since he arrived in New Zealand. Has Won over the Distance. Tini Uria will be making his second attempt over a two-mile journey when he contests the Fairlie Handicap at Tiniaru to-day. His previous effort, which met with success, was in the Kaikoura Cup last month. He won in good style there, and on that showing he should race prominently in to-day's engagement. Making Their Debut. Among the newcomers at Timaru today are Beaudelaire and l{e;;ina Derby. The former is a six-year-old bay marc by Nelson Bingen from Shining Bell,, and the latter is a three-year-old filly by Nelson Derby from a Logan Pointer mare. Regina Derby's breeding is of more interest than suggested by that given in the race book, as her dam is by Logan Pointer from Eegina de Oro. thus ranking as a sister to the erstwhile champion pacer, Native Chief. All arrangements are now finalised for the complete dispersal of 'lrotting Stock without reserve owned by Mr If. F. Nicoll, "Durbar Lodge," Ashburton. The sale is to be held at Ashburton on Thursday, March 23rd, at 11 a.m., by H. Matson and Co., in conjunction with Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., Ashbur-" ton. Refreshments will be provided, and purchasers met at the Ashburton Bailway Station by motors on the morning of the sale. Special terms are available to approved buyers of two-year-olds and upwards in training: 25 per cent, deposit on day of sale, balance in two years, and six per cent. In meantime 40 per cent, of Ist or 2nd stakes won to go to vendor in reduction of debt. Catalogues are now available from the auctioneers, and included are Arethusa, four years, world's champion tlirec-year- ; old over two miles; Wrackler, six years, ! N.Z. Cup-winner; First Wrack, a trotter; Bracken, Wrackeen, Ciro, N.Z. Derby winner. A filly foal by Wrack (imp.) from Trix Pointer. Many highly-bred yearlings and juveniles. Brood mares stinted to Wrack (imp.), and a number with foals at foot. Also the imported stallion Wrack (imp.), who has made a deep impression in New Zealand Light Harness history as a sire of champions. Also, on account of Miss Peggy Norton, Christcljurcb, the brood marc Trix Pointer (imp.), dam of Wrackler and Arethusa, stinted again to Wrack (imp.); Stella Amos Cimp.) stinted to Wrack. A mare by Hey do Oro (imp.) from Bonilene (imp.), dam of Bonny Logan, stinted to AV rack, and several gocrd trotters by Drusus (imp.) (sire of Iloyal Drusus. Dusolina, Raydus, etc.). I AUTUMN MEETING, j TO-DAY'S. PROGRAMME. The Timaru Trotting Club will hold iis Autumn Meeting at the Washdyke | racecourses to-day. The club has been i well favoured ill the matter of acceptances, and good-sized fields representing quality will be paraded for all events. The programme is as follows': 12.15 p.m.— | KINGSDOWN HANDICAP, |Of TO" tors. For trotters only. 4 m j c j lOsec class. One miie and five-eighths. Tanepai raced hadlv at N< w Brighton, but lie showed good iui'in at the hu-st Timaru Meeting, and lie may lie prominent in the running to-day. Garner looks the best of the remainder of the limit horses, but there will not have to be any slackening on their part, or the back-marker, Gay Paree, will be up with them. Modem Girl is likely to be favourite, with Tanej>ni and Garner also well fancied. 12.55 p.m.— TBIAL HANDICAP, Of 100 sov*. 4min 2sec class. One mile and five-eighths. Tatsy de Oro, and Wild Guv will probably comprise the favourite division. 1.40 p.m.— TIMARU TROTTING CUP HANDICAP. Of 275 sovs. 4min 34sec class. Two miles. Against this, however, Cranleigh is improving with each race. On the twelve yards mark the one to i make, most appeal is Baron Bingen ; in J view of his second plncing at Wellington and his subsequent good track form. His chief trouble will be the did- j tance. Tarndale raced well on the same course at the January Meeting, when ho was narrowly beaten into third j place, and another good effort may be j expected from him. Arachne failed to go away at Wellington, and she is anything but reliable at the barrier. Howover, her chance may be preferred to those of Ayrmont Chimes, Black Lion, and Wrackeen on 24yds, but Delightful appears to be a much-improved horse, and it will not bo surprising to see him well at the finish. Hitherto he has no J j appreciated a two mile journey, but he seems to be staying on better at present. Sunny Bob," from the back mark, has a big task in front of him, and ho should be held quite safe from 3Cyds behind. When final selections aro made Anon. Cranleigh, and Baron Bingen may solicit most support. 2.20 p.m.— SEADOWN HANDICAP, Of 120 sovs. 3min 37nce class. One mile and a half.

Special Sun ran second to On Parade at his last start,- and he is likely to run well, while,Onoto, a winner at the last Timaru' Meeting, .appeals most of the remainder. Claranda. Spec-inl Sun, and Logan Fraser comprise a formidable trio. 3 p.m.— TEMUKA HANDICAP. Of 140 sovs. Vor trotters only. 4min 55sec class. Tvro miles. I

Stanley Bingen is a good trotter and a good stayer, but •if is usually in trouble a't the lieginr'ing of his races and loses ground. With anything like a good start he should be close up at the finish. Great Burton can usually be depended upon to run a good race, and this may be her opportunity to improve on the worn! placing she recorded at New Bjighlon a couple of weeks ago. On Wellington form Hvdro should finish in front of Edith Voyage, and Quin"ty Thorpe may do best of the others. CHARGE AGAINST PUBLISHERS j DISMISSED. (rRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, March 11. A prosecution brought against A. W. Organ and A. A. Capel, before Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, on charges of publishing race programmes without licenses from 4he controlling bodies was dismissed, the Magistrate considering that the publications were not programmes. Organ' appeared on two charges respecting tlie "Sports Guide" and Capel on one count respecting the "New Zealand Kacing Pilot/' Detective-Sergeant Kelly said the cases were brought- under Section 37 of the Police Offences Act, which laid down that no publication purporting to be a programme of sport could be issued without authority from the organisation controlling the sport. Counsel for the defendants said one question for decision was. whether the publications actually were programmes. The Magistrate said he was not able to see that either publication was a programme and dismissed the charges.'
