Just over thirty years ago the Nobel prizes were established under the will of the famous Swedish chemist and inventor, and since the first awards in 1901, over £.1,027,000 has been distributed .to famous people for work in science, literature, and-the cause of peace. Britain comes second in ' the list of awards, the other countries in "the first font" being France, Ger-. tttany, and the United States. The total number of prizes so far has been 135, varying in value from £6333 to £9611 They are paid from the interest on a trust fruid of £1,700,000 4 ' " \
