Lempriere (Melbourne) is registered at Warner's Hotel. Messrs W. A. Le Pine (Auckland), E. R. Smith, and W. T. Ibbotson (Dunedin) are guests at the Clarendon Hotel, Messrs E. B. Hey wood (Hamilton), R. C. Somcrvillc, G. D. M. Goodwin, A. Fraser Castle (Wellington), and P. N. Robinson (Dunedin), arc staying at the New City Hotel. A motion of sympathy with Cr. J. Sharp, of the Halswell County Council, in the death of his sister, was carried at last evening's meeting of tho Heathcote County Council. A motion of sympathy with Cr. A. I. Fraer in the death of her husband, the Rev. C, A. Fraer, was passed at evening's meeting of the Heathcoto County Council. Messrs E. A. Batt, J. Mcintosh (Wellington), W. D. G. Hartley (Dunedin), G. G. Goodman, W. H. Wynyard (Auckland), B. C. Dowey (London), and A. Blogg (Melbourne) ore staying at the United Service Hotel. Mr D. Reese, a member of the Railways Board, and a life member of the New Zealand Cricket Council, undeK went an operation at Lewisham Private Hospital yesterday. He w ; as reported last evening to be making satisfactory progress. Latest arrivals at the Central Hotel are:—Mr Charles Weight (Roxburgh), Mr Hazlett R. Whyte (Wellington), H. G. C. Brooks (Timaru), Mr, Henry Roads (Auckland), Mr D. G. McLennan (Waverley). Mr J. 11. Brunt, of Christchurch. has received the following tejegrarii from the Registrar of the Justices' Federation of New Zealand from Wanganui "Fedora f.ion Conference sends j-ou greetings, and expresses hope of your speedy restoration to health." "Mr Brunt i>? so far recovered as to be able to be out and about. Mr J. S. Jessep, deputy-chairman of the Unemployment Board, who has been indisposed, for the past six weeks as the result of a motoring accident., has resumed his duties. Mr A. T. Donnelly, the Crown Solicitor, was elected president of the Canterbury Law Society at the annual meeting of the Society yesterday. Mr R. Twyneham was elected vice-presi-dent, Mr A. F. Wright, honorary treasurer, and Messrs M. J. Burns, A. S. Taylor, D. E. Wanklyn, C. S. Thomas, H. C.' D. van Aseh, J. D. Hutchison, K. M. Gresson and T. D. Haraan to the council. Mr David McFarlane, the newlyelected president of the Federation of New Zealand Justices' Association, is well known in Wanganui, where he was born and where he has been in business for many years. Mr McFarlane hns been, and still is, connected with many public activities. He is at present chairman of the Wanganui Girls' College Board of Governors, and president of the Wanganui branch of the Justices' Association. He is also president of the Wanganui Garrison Band, and vice-president of 1 the Wanganui and District Development League. Mr McFarlane acted on the Efficiency Board during the War, 191-1-TS, and on .the Repatriation Board, 1918-24. Captain E. W. Ballantine, who toured Australia and New Zealand with the South African cricket team in the interests of tho Exchange Telegraph Company 's London cable service, passed through Christchurch yesroiday on his way to the Southern Lakes and Mt. Cook. On his return ho proposes to make a trip to the Glaciers and Nelson. Captain Ballantine who has reported his 91st Test match, will remain in Queensland axd New South Wales, and connect with the' English cricket team .\t Fremantle in October, and so get nearer his "century" of tests.
At the conference of representatives of local bodies and o flier organisations interested in attempts to solve the unemployment problem, convened by the Ghristchurch branch, of the Town Planning Institute of New Zealand, the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) has promised to preside. The conference is to be held at 2 p.m. on Monday in the City Council Chamber, and the intention is to eet vp a committee to consider suggested schemes of productive work to be recommended to be put in hand as unemployment relief works. AJready the Institute has received quite a number of such suggestions, and in the event of a committee being set up they will be placed before it for consideration.
Cr. A. A. McLaehlau intends testing tire feeling of the Ghristchurch .City Council on the question of the 10 per cent, penalty on unpaid rates. He has given notice to move at Monday night's meeting of the City Council as follows: "That the CouncU arrange a conference of local bodies with a view to a combined application to the Prime Minister for & remission of the It) pel cent, penalty on' the rates due for the yea?-is3l-32,"
