;— ASHBURTON. UNEMPLOYMENT. The executive of tii.e Ashburton Unemployment Committee met yesterday afternoon, when the Deputy-Mayor, Mr R. Kerr presided. The Unemployment Commissioner au vised that the sum of £260 had been set aside for No. 4A Scheme placements in the Ashburton district, and that amount would enable the committee to place 20 single men immediately for periods of 26 weeks each. In reply to the local committee's request for an increased allocation for No. 5 Scheme, the Unemployment Commissioner advised that it had been found possible to raise the allocation by £35 for the week ending March 19th, and

£23 for the week ending March 26th, the total allocations being£3o6 15s and £219 15s respecti%ely. . It was reported that the amount required foT next week was £485 Bs, and the number of men requiring work whs 247. It was decided to give the three and four-day men two days' work, and to cut out the single men without dependents. The Balance of the. monoy would be divided among the most necessitous cases. Mr A. Prentice said that the sooner there was an increase in the unemployment tax in New Zealand the batter. At the present relief wages men could not feed and clothe themselves and their families properly. Nine applications under the No. 4A Scheme were granted. Technical School Board. The Technical School Board of Managers met yesterday afternoon, when the chairman (Mr T. Hayes) presided. The financial statement showed that there was a credit balance of £330 Is lOd. With regard to the lack of accommodation at the school, the s Department advised in reply to the Board's letter that the buildings could nqt be in creased at present. It also stated that Mr La Trobe, superintendent of Technical Education, Wellington, would visit the school next week.. . , The chairman stated that if the executive 's deliberations with Mr La Trobe were not successful, the executive recommended that the wool-classing room be lined and a verandah be closed in and lined. Messrs W. G. Hillier and B. Houston were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing months. Principal's Beport. The principal (Mr B. J. Thompson) reported that the present enrolment was 312, of whom 133 were boys and 179 girls. New pupils numbered 144. The day school roll on March Ist was 25 above that of last year, and the Education Department had agreed to the appointment of a domestic science instructor, and in the meantime had given permission for a relieving teacher to be employed. Enrolments for the evening -classes had been somewhat irregular. Of 89 pupils who left the school last year, 11 had positions-in various trades and industries, 13 had positions in shops, 36 had positions on farms, 17 girls were wanted for work at home, 2 had gone to other schools, and ft were at home awaiting pCsjtions. ■ Hakatere Lodge. Bro. B. Parsons, N.G., presided over a large attendance at the meeting of the Hakatere Lodge on Wednesday evening. The annual balance-sheet and report of the United Friendly Societies' Dispensary was received, m mbers considering that' it Showed a IZghly satisfactory position. It was repeated f ,liat five brothers were declarea off tin- sick list, leaving four still m receipt of sick benefits. One proposal for membership was received. A transfer was received 'fraiu the Ridgely Lodge (Christchurch). Brothers from the UarcLodge (Dunedin) aud the Adapta Lodge (New South Wales) were welcomed. It was decided to invite the Daphne Lodge to a social to be held at the next meeting. The Weather. .
