AUCTION* H. H. MATSON AND CO. M V T S 0 X AND CO. IJEI'OUT OX ADDINGTON MARKLT AS I'OLLOWS: — STORE SHEEP. H MATSON und CO. report in this seclion an entry o£ 0500. The catalogue was a v( .,v mixed one. One or two consignments rather nice two-tooth Ewes came forward both in respect to lino wools arid threc-quar-•terbreds. There was a good sprinkling of fairly good four-yenr-old Ewes, but the greater portion of the catalogue was made ,ip of unattractive lots, thin-pelted, light hone and light shearers. The more ono attends sales the more convinced does one become that the breeding of light lambs is » dangerous precedent for Canterbury. want bono in the sheep, and we want thick pelts to produce the heavy fleeces, if our farmers are expected to pay their way. Light >heep lor light countries are all right, but not if wa meet dry seasons and are over-i-tocked. The first point buyers should look for when purchasing sheep for breeding it the front legs—'.hey must have the bone. During the day numerous graziers and fattfuwrs were comparing to-day's sales with the Country Fairs. This is hardly a comparison. Each centre wants and produces a. grade of sheep that suits the locality, whereas in Addington, grades of all classes come forward, and in many instances represent various earmarks and various brands. The following are some of the principal sales: —Two and four-tooth ewes from 17s to 20s, fair 13s to 16s, others 10s fid to 12s; good breeding ewes up to 15s sd, B srade 10s to 12s, C grade 7s to 9s, D. grade Is to 6s, culls lis to 3s. The greater portion represented fine-woolled lambs, with a sprinkling of Down cross lambs and three-quarterbreds. The general standard of the catalogue was medium, but buyers were in evidence for all grades. At one period it looked aB though the market were going to slip, but it was only for a few pens, and then it recovered and closed firm at opening rates. This year. Last year. The quality was mixed, many plain and light ewes being included in the yarding. The odd consignments of good prime sheep, of both sexes, nhowed a sharp rise on last week's rates, in our opinion, in some instances as much as 4s per head. The medium grade of aheap met with a ready sale, but did not show such an advance in price as the primer sorts, while the aged and inferior lots showed little change on last week's rates.
