COUNTY COUNCILS

WAIMAIRI. The monthly meetins of the Va^ alrl County Council was held last evening. Those present were:— Crs. W. J. Walter (chapman), O. E Cross,. J. Cleland, F. 8. Scott, C. W. Moore. W. G. Chapman, .G. Gardiner; J. T. O. Newnham, and P. Spencer. Cr. J. Liggins reported regarding the deputation to the Minister for Public Works in connexion with the maintenance of Travis road. • The .chairman reported that the committee and Mr Freeman had inspected the Marshland road and had approved the -work, hut no approval had been received from t'ae Highways Board. It was. • decided' to clean the Kapuatone creek under the No. 5 Scheme. ■ The county clerk's report showed that upto date £20,659 out o£ the total of £45,088 -levied in fates had been collected. An amount of £24,429 was still outstanding, and if ratepayers were to escape the 10 per cent, penalty, and get the full advantage of the 12j per cent, rebate, this amount would have to be paid on or before March 12th. The organiser of the Christchurch Free Ambulance (Mr Y. Roberts) waited on the Council, asking for financial assistance. The application was referred to the new Council. • A letter was received from the Town Planning Institute inviting the Council to .Bend representatives to a, meeting on March i4th, to consider the preparation of a comprehensive report on development works of a permanent and economic character, which could be undertaken profitably within the metropolitan area. Crs. Walter and Cross were appointed. A letter was received asking permission to erect huts along the towing path at the river Styx. Several objections were received from the residents and the application was refused. The Tramway Board wrote, stating that no application was made to the Metropolitan Committee. for a renewal of license for the Northcota bus service, on account 'of the heavy losses now being sustained in the running of the service. A letter was received from Mr J. Gordon asking that the area at the rear of Northcote Settlement should be made into a park, also for permission to use one of the unoccupied houses as _ a meeting-place, for social functions, to raise funds to provide sports gear and other park equipment. The matter was,left in .the hands of Cr. Cbanman to meet the residents.
