RACING AND TROTTING

LATEST NEWS FROM FAR AND NEAR

RACING FIXTURES.

ho has tho necessary courage, as ho has displayed at all his starts. 110 should win many more races for Mr J. S. Feehan, who is a member of tho V.R.C. Committee. In the Sydney Oup Middle Watch has 8-1, and is engaged also in the A.J.C. St. Leger, in which race he will have another clianco to prove his superiority to Amnion Ra over a distance. A.J.C. Classics. After his V.R.C. St. Leger failure, Amnion Ra is not a certain starter in the A.J.C. classic, but no decision is likely to be mado for a couple of weeks (says tht> Sydney "Daily Telegraph"). When Amnion Ra arrived from New Zealand some time back his owner, Mr C. C. Sheath, announced that lie did not; want to race tho gelding over a long distance in Melbourne, but Jamieson prevailed upon him to start him in the St. Leger. It seemed picking up easy money, but Amnion Ra failed as a stayer, and as he will again tackle Middle Watch at Randwick his connexions may decide to keep Amnion Ra within a distance limit, which he can successfully handle. Ammon Ra might got a milo and throe-quarters if he were expressly trained for it, but it would jeopardise his chances in tho shorter w.f.a. race 3, and perhaps he will run in the Spring Stakes and the All-Aged Stakes at Randwick. Against horses like Chide, Veilmond, and Nightmarch the Spring Stakes might not be severe, especially as a good three-year-old enjoys an advantage under the w.f.a. scale at Easter; and the scarcitv of good niilcrs should make the All-Aged Stakes fairly easy. Ammon Ra's absence from the St. Leger would cortainlv rob the classic of some interest, but it would not leave the race completely colourless, for the V.R.C. St. Leger winner, Middle Watcli, may find Johnnie Jason a far tougher proposition at Randwick, and Beelbee may 'add considerably to the opposition. Items from Hawke's Bay. Mr J. McCartin's steeplechaser Royal Elm was to have gone to Sydney on Friday with J. M. Cameron, who went over with Gold Trail and Lotus Lily, but he injured himself on the eve Of tho trip. Cameron, left instructions that the hurdler Gay Lass was also to go over if she showed sufficient form in the hurdle races at Napier. Gay Lass, however, hit the second fence on the first day so hard that she was unable to start on the second day, and she will not see Randwick. , Messrs McLeod and Slater are making arrangements to ship Ar&inah and Lady Alert, the two-year-old sister to Watch Officer, to Melbourne on March 18th, in charge of 11. S. Greeile. W. J. Brougliton will make the trip to do the riding. ! J. H. J'efferd has had to turn out the Magpie colt he was training for Mr L. K. S. Mackinnon, of Melbourne, but he haß his box filled by thp Chief :puler— Baylock colt purchased by Mr E. J. Watt at the Trentham sales last January. W. McKinnon, who recently took over Mr .7'. S. McLeod's team, is bringing My Own into work again almost immediately. He has* also in hand a couple of yearlings, one a gelding half-brother by Arausio to Toxeuma, and the other a colt, also by Arausio, out of a half-sister to Toxeuma. This mare never raced. A Veteran. Star Stranger was foaled in 1922, so that he is now in his tenth year and at an age when ho is definitely on tho down gfade. His showing in the Napier Cup, however, indicates that with a stand-up to his preparation he lias a chance of picking up another stake or two before going into permanent retirement. It is really the fact that the old fellow has done so well, coupled with the presentday weakness of handicap horses, that has prompted J. H. Jefferd to give him another trial. Although ho was Out for a good spell he did not put on the ÜBual condition, so that it watf easier to get him into racing Bhape. He had bqen galloping satisfactorily in private, and in tho race on Friday he made a very bold showing, a feature of his race being tho forward .position he occupied in the running. Usually he tails off early, but he was up with them all tha way. He is engaged at Trentham on tho second day of the Wellington Meeting, and he may make the trip.

Reminders. General entries for the Canterbury •Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting, acceptances for the Great Autumn and Great Easter Handicaps, and first forfeits for the Champagne and Challenge Stakes are due at 8 p.m. .to-morrow. For Trentham. F. D. Jones had both Shatter and Moorbird nominated for the Thompson Handicap, but the latter has not done well during the past week, and Shatter, to be ridden by A. Messervy, will represent the stable. It is likely, however, that Moorbird may be on hand to race, on the second day of the Meeting. A Big Team. Mrs A. McDonald, who is now the leading trainer with 20 wins, will take « large team to the Wellington Meeting. It will includp Blacksmith, Chief Cook, Chief Marionette, In Vain, Inflation, La Moderne, and Chief Clerk. In Vain was entered at Napier, but hurt herself, and could not run. Mrs McDonald recently received from Miss E. D. Robinson, of North Canterbury, the well-known Catmint gelding Royal Mint, who will be prepared for winter racing over hurdles. Novice Steeplechaser. Overhaul continues to school well over the steeplechase fences at Wingatui. He was sent once round one day last week, giving a finished display 1, of clean and fast jumping. Tho Tractor gelding may play a prominent part in somo of the important cross-country events in the winter. He has started a good deal earlier than his northern opponents, who have been unable to do much schooling on account of the hard tracks. Derby Candidate Lame. A cable message from London states that Lord Astor's Mannamead, who was second favourite for the English Derby, to be run at Epsom on June Ist, has become lame, and it is doubtful whether it will be possible to prepare the youngster either for the Two Thousand Guineas or the Derby. Lord Astor has had remarkable ill-fortune with his Derby candidates. Sydney Racing. When the last mail left Sydney, the order of favouritism for the two big Randwick events at Easter was as follows: —Doncaster Handicap: Winooka; Gallantic, Legislator, Pentheus; Lady Linden, Myles . le Coplen, Pavilion, Stephen, Waugoola; Dermid, Greenline, Lady Pam, Lightning tylarch, Middle Watch, Maybe, Sua Eagle, Spoon, Waterline. Sydney Cup: Middle Watch, Pretzel; Chide, Century Tire, Homedale, Shadow King, Veilmond; Johnnie Jason, KoOmeela, Mira Donna; Ormolu, Pentheus, Second Wind, Strength. } Amjnon Ra Outstayed. That Ammon Ra id not a genuine stayer was the opinion expressed by the majority Of racing men at Flemington on February 27th after tho \New Zealand three-year-old had been comfortably defeated by Middle Watch in the St. Leger Stakes, says tho "Argus." On the faco of that performance their opinion seems corroct, but excuscß can be made for Ammpn Ra. In tho early stages of the race he did not obtain a clear run, and was not able to stretch out comfortably. Approaching the five-furlongs x>oat he was at the rear of the field, but a littlo later McCarteii gave him his head. Ammon Ra went past tho others at a great pace, and at the straight entrance was With the leadors. A furlong and a half from homo he had Johnnie Jason beaten, but immediately he was challenged by Middle Watch. For a stride or two he sofcmed likely to hold off that colt, but Middle Watch gradually wore him' down, and over tho last half-furlong went right away to defoat him by two lengths. McCarten was blatne€ for having mado too much use of Ammon Ra between tho half-mile and the straight entrance, but no doubt he considered it wiser to allow him to run along rather than to run the risk of interference. Possibly with a clearer passage in the earlier stages of tho race Ammon Ra would have made a better fight, but that does not detract from tho merit of Middlo Watch's performance. He was with Ammon Ra at the rear of the fiold six furlongs from home, was giving that horso a fair start at the top of the straight* and fairly outstayed him. In appearance Middle Watch is not a champion, but

Ohrysology Improving. None of the progeny of the great mare Desert Gold have approached her class, but Ohryßblogy ihas proved a useful performer, and his win in the Napier Cup last week indicated that he may be at home over longer journeys than he has attempted hitherto. He has been successful previously up to a milo, and lias won races at Takapuna, Auckland, Wellington, and Riccarton, but last week was his first effort beyoftd a mile. It was thought that he had a good prospect, and the general opinion was that it would be enhanced if he was held in behind. However, he went to- the front early, and led over the last seven furlongs, which made his effort look the better. He will run in the Thompson Handicap next week, He is a good beginner, and has a handy weight, 7-12, and must be placed well up in the list of possibles for the mile race. Cape Royal Fails.

Backed as if thoro was no settling day, the New Zealand two-year-oM, Cape Royal, gavo a shocking display in the Gibson Camicliaol Stakes on March 2nd, at Flcmington. At Caulfield, on Futurity Day, Capo Royal won tho second division of tho Alma Stakes from Lady Joy and Kuvera, and the form looked really good, when Kuvera w6n the Sires' Produce Stakes on February 27th. He hovered between odds on and odds a'gainst for some time, and finally closed at short odds on. He was running second to Brave Boy when the field settled down, and later ho managed to get his lread in front of Bravo Boy, but it was for a few strides only. On reaching the straight Cape Eoyal failed to respond to the whip and was only fourth when the judge's box was reached, * Brave Boy winning comfortably from the outsiders, Suble and Dutchie. Derby Possibilities. The two-year-old races at Napier -were interesting, although there was no youngster of decided superiority. The first day's winner, Chief Marionette, and the runner-up, Aesculus, and her victor on the second day, Courtyard, were the best. At this period of the year it is usual to lteep an eye on two-year-olds with a view to noxt season's classics. Our earlier cracks, Inflation and Lack, both suffered defeat, and in any case, their showings did not suggest stamina next year, although Inflation, being out of a Boniform mare, way get the Derby distance. Closing Time, who was by general consent deemed one of the leading two-year-olds at the Auckland Summer Meeting, where he ran in handicaps, has proved definitely in Victoria that his forte is sprinting and not staying. Possibly next year-'s Derby colt may bo in a South Island stable, but ao far as the North is concerned, Mr T. H. Lowry has 9 couple of possibilities in Aesculus

and Courtyard. The former is by Night Eaid from Tinihanga, by Absurd from the Multiform marc' Formless, and Courtyard, bred by Mr Lowry himself, is by Grandcourt from First Blow, by Finland from "War Talk, by Martian from Gossip. Ho is a half-brother to Gascony and Second Wind. They have not had much racing experience, and opinions seem to be divided as to which is the better of the pair. For a Derby proposition a number of good judges in the Bay incline towards Courtyard. TROTTING NOTES. Reminders. Nominations for the New Zealand Metropolitan T.C.'s Easter Meeting close to-day at noon. Acceptances for tho Manawatu Meeting close to-morrow at (i p.m. Acceptances for the Wyndliam T.C.'s Meeting close to-morrow at 5 p.m. Changed Hands. The four-year-old gelding Lemoro, by Key do Oro from Dilemma, has been disposed of by M. B. Edwards to Mr J. Guy, in whose name Don Chenault races. Favourably Commented Upon. A trotter in the south whose form to date has caused her to como into favourable discussion is the five-year-old Kamaldar, who made her first appearance on a race track this season. She is a sister to Merco Bingen, and she is expected to develop into a very useful performer with a littlo more race experience. Prospects for Timaru Cup. As tho result of form disclosed in tho R. A. Armstrong Memorial Handicap, decided at Wellington last Saturday, the prospects of Cranleigh and Anon in the Timaru Gup, to be decided on Saturday, appear to be more favourable. Although Araehne stood on th.; mark in her Wellington Handicap, she is not likely to come into much disfavour on that account, and it may be expected that she will be among the best supported for Saturday's race. Waimate Owned and Trained. ' Included in tho acceptors 'for the Morven and Hook trots at the Waimate Meeting to be held next week is tho Waimate owned and trained gelding Irish Bingen. lie is a three-year-old by Nelson Bingen from Irish Whispers, who was sired by Logan Pointer from a hiaro by Rothschild from Violet M., the dam of tho good Waimate performer Vilo. Irish Bingen is owned by tho well-known .South Canterbury sportsman, Mr T. Twoniey. Iu Form. Major Lind drew attention to his Timaru prospects by the style in which he covered two miles at Addington yesterday morning. Colonial Boy made the pace for him over one mile and a quarter for Major Lind to go tho rest i of the distance alone. Beaching the ] mile and a half in 3min 23scc, he took 4min 30 2-sscc to complete the journey, but it was a pleasing effort throughout. A Slow Beginner. Stanley Bingeu has gone on the right way since he ran third to Quincey Thorpe and Great Burton at the last New Brighton Meeting, and he i% in good order for his Timaru engagement. His trouble at present is that he takos a long time to settle down in his races, but when he learns to. begin smartly, he should not be long in annexing another stake. Will Have Friends. Winning so convincingly at her last start, Princess Tliea iB likely to have It larger army of supporters when she is next produced than when she won at New Brighton. There is no doubt about tlie mare's brilliance, but sho has more than once mado a bad begining an occurrence which has robbed her of the chanfcc of winning more races. Likely to Race Prominently. The Motukarara winnctrs Ciarandai and Midnight Sun are down to compete at thp Timaru Meeting, and judging by their most recent form it is likely that they will again race prominently in their near engagements. Names Claimed. Mr J. It. McKcnzie's three two-year* olds by Great Bingen, which last season showed such exceptional yearling speed at Adidngton, have had the following names claimed for them:—The Blapfast gelding will race as Prince Roydon, tho Nyallo gelding as Taxpayer, and the Glbndora gelding will race as T'ollgate.

Improving. Great Bell has shown gradual improvemont since she>. has been trained at Addiiigt&n, and there still SCettis a chance that she will regain form approaching that which she displayed several seasons ago, when trained in the south. AGUA CALIENTE HANDICAP. PHAR LAP'S HOOF HEALING. ("UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION —BY BI.ECTKIO TETEORAPH —COPYMGHT.) (Received March 9th, 7.15 p.m.) AGUA CALIENTE, March 8. [THE PRESS Special Service.] DUNIiDIN, March 9. There was r. good attendance at llie dispersal Bale of Mr G. J. Barton's racing team tiiis afternoon.
