RANGIORA. The General Committee of the Rangiora Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Club met on Monday evening, Mr J. C. Banfield presiding. Two resignations from the club were accepted. The treasmer'a statement showed a credit balance of £B7 2s 3d, and accounts for £7 8s 4d were passed for payment. Regret was expressed at tho illness of Mr D. McKay, and a motion Of sympathy with him was passed. Reports irom tho different sections were satisfactory, the recent rain having improved the green and lawns. The matter of the purchase of a motor lawnmower was brought up, but action was deferred. The monthly meeting of the Young People's Missionary Auxiliary was held ia the (Southbrook Methodist Sunday School on Saturday, when Mrs Young presided over an attendance of 24, After devotions, arrangements were made for the birthday meeting ?n April. Several gifts were handed m for the missionary box. KAIKOURA. The annual meeting of members of the Kaikoura Orchestral Society was hold the Band Rooms. E. A, W. Smith (president) presided ovor a fair attendance, Tho secretary (Miss Monica Mackle) read the balance-sheet showing the receipts to hate been £74 14s 3d (including balance of £36 17s 3d brought forward), and the expenditure £46 13s lOd, leaving a balance to credit of £2B Os 10d. Assets were set down at £lOl 17s lOd after allowing for .25 per cent, depreciation, and liabilities were 6s 6d. Arrangements were made for the pro' vision of afternoon tea on the vestry > "Produce Day," which is to be herd ! in April. A presentation -was made to Mrs J. F. Tonkin, who is leaving the district. Harvest thanksgiving services • were held in the Parish Church last Sunday. The church was decorated. Owing to tho unfavourable season the amount of produce did not equal that of former years; All the produce has been sent to St. Saviour's Orphanage. WOODEND. About 250 people, of whom the majority wore children, travelled to Pleasant Point on Saturday for tho annual picnic of Woodend School. - At the committee meeting on Monday evening, the treasurer reported that there was a credit balance of about £7 in the picnic funds. It was decided that a first aid outfit should be procured for the school, and that lockers should be installed in thp infant room. ' The headmaster, Mr Heath, reported that the speed of motor-cars passing the school was a source of danger to the children, and it was decided to write to the council, drawing its attention to the matter. * On Monday evening the trustees of the Methodist Church met to make arrangements for the annual harvest thanksgiving festival, which takes place on Sunday'next. Mr J. Voss, vicepresident of -the conference, will bo the preacher. SOUTH MALVERN. The monthly meeting of the Glentunnel School Committee was held in the school on Monday night. There were present Messrs W. G. Smith (chairman), G. D. Marsh, and S. 0. Marsh, and the headmaster, Mr L. A. Marshall. It was reported that there were 35 boys and 32 girls on the roll. The average attendance for the month was 64.5, which represented a percentage of 97.1. : It was decided to hold a concert, contributed by the Joy Germs Revue Company, for the purpose of raising money for school funds late in April, Mr Peter McSknnmmg, M.P. The local branch of the Mothers' Union held tho first meeting of the present year in the Parish Hall on Friday afternoon, the preceding the meeting being taken by the vicar, the Rev. H. B. Jones. Keen interest was evinced in the address given by Mrs Marriner, of Sumner. Another successful dance, conducted bv the School Committee in the interests of the school funds, was held on Saturday evening. Stamler s Band supplied the music. Extras were played by Miss Joyce Kolkman, and competitions were won by Miss vv. Murphy, Mrs J. Easterbrook, Mr T. ftmitn, and Mr W. Murphy. Mr J. Smith was M.C. Neill. A card tournament was hold, the winners being Mrs Duff and Mrs Moore, both ot Springston South, and Mr J. Stalker and Mr Moore. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss C. Pannell and Mr J. Itennott. A duct in costume was given by Misses Edna Smith and Lois I)ulieu, Danco music was supplied by Miss K. Neill, Mesdames Clark and Marks, and Messrs E. Watkins and E. Stalker were M.C.'s. The twenty-ninth-annual meeting ol the Ellesmere Brass Band, held ■at leeston on Monday night, was presided over by Mr J. it. Jackson, and there was a large attendance of members and supporters. 'Delegates from all the clubs in North and Mid-Canterbury are to meet in Christchurch to-night, when a programme embodying the fixtures of all the clubs will be prepared. The president, secretary, and Messrs L. C. Lemon and W. Patterson are to represent Ellesmere at the conference. Prior to leaving Leeston, where he has resided for a number of years, Mr W. S. Sayille was entertained on Monday evening by a number of friends ! ah a smoke concert, at which Mr F. j B. Clausen presided. Eulogistic references were made to the guest's good qualities by several speakers, and good wishes were expressed for his future success. GLENROY llie junior friends of Glenroy entertained their parents and friends at a pleasant afternoon in the ball on Saturday, when Miss Havelaar, organiser or the Junior Friends' League for St. Saviour's Orphanages, was present and gave an address on the work of the League and her church work in England during the past-.four, years. Miso Bo wen, president of the League, also spoke on the duties of the country secretary. At the conclusion of the meeting the Rev. H. N. Roberts proposed a vote of thanks to the speakers. Afternoon tea was served. A ''bring and buy" table, arranged by the junior friends in aid of c« v ' our - was well patronised. On Sunday afternoqn at the close of the Anglican service the presentation of prizes in connexion with the Sunday school took place, Mr W. Hall presenting each child with a book. At a meeting of the tennis club held on Saturday evening the following were present: Mrs R. G. Keith, Misses D. Thwaites, Ure (2). B. Powell (secretary), Messrs J, Thwaites, P. Isherwood, Hunt (2), and Hams (2). A motion of condolence was passed with Mrs S. Roseveare. Miss N. Tliwaites's resignation from the committee was received, and Miss A. Ure. was elected to fill the vacancy. _lt was decided to hold a dance in aul of club funds. The following is a summary of the weather observations for the month-ot February: —Rainfall, 3.08 in. HORORATA; There was a record attendance at the Anglican Bible Class meeting on Monday nisht in the parish-room. The Rev. H. N. Roberts addressed the ■ meeting. OURUHIA. Mr Frank Thompson, of the Survey staff of the Waimakariri River Trust, left at the week-end for Dunedin, where he will take up his duties as manager of the Vacuum Oil Company. {Scholars and others interested in the Coutts Island school held a picnic on Saturday. The picnic party held their gathering at The Pines, Kaiapoi, and a happy day was spent. Returns from wheat threshing on Coutts Island are now to hand. Yields fenerally did not reach last year's gures, the highest being 78 bushels, and the average for the Island 50 bushels. Onions growers in the Ouruliia district have been offered £8 per ton for this season's orop. Some growers had sold forward at about £3 10s per ton Miss Roiia McMillan, who has been spending a fortnight's holiday in Nel- . son, returned to Ouruliia on Monday. On Friday the Victory School held their picnic at Stewart's Gully, while the Vacuum Oil Company and the Railway picnics were largely attended there at tho week-end. On Monday evening Mr E. H. Ashby j presided ovpr a meeting of the Ouruliia Cricket Club. It was decided that tho Akaroa match be arranged for early in the ' next season. Tlie club secretary, Mr G. Hassnll, was instructed to write to the Ouruhia Park Committee to ask for permission to lay down a concrete pitch at the park for next season's play. SOUTHBRIDGE. Mr A. McPherson presided over the monthly meeting of the Southbridge District High School committee, held on Monday night. The chairman reported that the Education Bourd had bupplied some additional desks, because of the' increased roll number, and that another teacher had been appointed. INotice was received from the Board that a grant of £7 10s had been made towards a water service nt the headmaster's residence. The committee instructed its delegates to the School Committees' Association to support a VVaikato remit that dental nurses should be asked to collect fees for dental services. A ; sum of £1 10s was voted to the swimming club for allowing the school children the use of the bath. The headmaster reported that Mr Thomson had beeu appointed teacher in the secondary department on account of an increase in the toll number, and that a re-organisation of the classes had been made necessary. A class of instruction for teachers in the new physical culture would be held at Leeston next Friday, when the various schools would be closed. It was decided to ask the Canterbury Seed Company for permission to take the secondary boys to one of their farms.
