Tho Japanese have asked the Settlement- authorities to" control the cleaning artd policing of Chapei, but they refuse unless asked by tho Chinese. In the meantime the Japaneso are consolidating their positions on tho front. Their aeroplanes report heavy concentrations of Chinese at many points beyond the 20-kilometre zone. Incoming passengers by the Yangtze river steamers report heavy firing 011 Sunday in tho Liuho'area.
