UNEMPLOYMENT.

WOMEN'S MEETING AT NEW BRIGHTON. RELIEF COMMITTEE FORMED. A meeting of women, convened by Miss Irene A. M. Leaver at the request of the New Brighton Unemployment Committee, was held in the New Brighton Borough Council Chambers yesterday afternoon. Among those present were women representing all parts of the borough, including Mrs T. M, Curnow, Lieut. J. B. Hunter (of the Salvation Army), lira A. E. Lawry, Mesdames T. Bennett, R. Campbell, W. Hulme, E. Dalton, H. M. Benson, M. E. Sawtell, F. J. Bromley, ,J. Cain, N. C: Fraser, E. E. Pollard, and S. Goodman, and Miss Irene Leaver. Miss Leaver presided and pointed out that the main Unemployment Committee hoped that the women of the borough would arrange to provide clothing for the unemployed during the coming winter. Much could be done if garments collected' were, altefed and remade, and if working parties wfirfe- formed and material purchased at wholesale rates the clothing problem would be much relieved. Tlie main Unemployment Committee, while working on a different basis to that employed by the "Pound' Scheme" last year, had provisionally adopted a scheme that had worked successfully in Lower Hutt. It was hoped that the women present would form themselves into a Women's Relief Committee and find a method of providing sufficient funds to be self-supporting. On the motion of Mrs Campbell, it was decided that all present constitute a Women's Relief Committee, with power to add to their number. The following officers were appointed:— chairman, Misa Leaver; vice-chairman, Mrs Bromley; secretary and treasurer. Lieut. Hunter. The committee decided to carry on a produce and general stall at the Easter gala, . which is being organised for the benefit of the Unemployed Committee's efforts. The Women's Comipittee undertook to canvass the whole of the borough for gifts of produce and clothing, and were allocated zones to prevent overlapping. It was decided that collecting books with the Mayor's (Mr E. A. M. Leaver's) authority to collect attached be given each canvasser.
