SOUTH CANTERBURY.

TIMARU. POWER BOARD. The opinion that the financial position of the South Canterbury Power Board at March 31st would, in spite of economic conditions, be equally as good as for the previous year was expressed by the chairman (Mr J. Kennedy) at yesterday's meeting. He pointed out that the Board was able to meet full depreciation from revenue, and still have a credit balance of approximately £3OOO. During the past four years the whole of the Board's commitments had been met from revenue, and before this no provision was required for depreciation. After considering a draft contract for the supply of power for five years from April Ist, 1932, to March 31st, 1937, at the same price as in the previous five years, the Board decided not to enter into a new contract with the Govi •nment until the Minister for Public Works gave a definite reply to the Canterbury Boards which waited upon him recently and requested a reduction in charges. On the chairman's recommendation it was decided to stago displays at the Fairlie and Geraldine Shows on March 28th and April 7th respectively, and also* during the Temuka Progress League's Shopping Week from March 12th to 19th. After a lengthy discussion on the question of depreciation in relation to the Board's finances, a motion was carried authorising the Finance and Executive Committee to present a detailed schedule on which the estimates could be framed. Plunket Society. The monthly meeting of the Society was held in the Council Cham-, bers. Present: Mesdames H. W. Monaghan (in the chair), H. SinclairThomson, C. W. Wood, jun., A. Irvine, D. 0. Murdoch, T. W. Satterthwaite, F. Lewis, G. R. Kingston, W. H. Helmore, K. de Castro, L. M. Inglis, F. 8. Cave, W. Baymond, A. Wigley, F. F. A. Ulrich, and M. A. Raymond. Accounts amounting to £73 16s 9d were passed for payment. A circular letter was read advising the committee that the amount of the levy on the Timarn branch towards tho superannuation fund for Plunket nurses would be £24 19s lOd.—This sum was included in the amount of the monthly accounts, which were passed for payment.. . Nurse Murphy reported that a total of 30 cases had been treated dnring February. Visits to the office had numbered 663, while 282 homes had been called at. The car had- travelled 239 miles. The majority of the babies were progressing satisfactorily, but there had been several cases of digestive upset and colds, also two cases of chicken pox. Unemployed Workers' Union. Thorough organisation of the Tiniaru Unemployed Workers' Union so that they could dictate terms, was urged by Mr G. T. Roller at a general meeting on Monday evening called to discuss the proposed Mackenzie County camps. Mr R. Laplanche presided., t>The weakness lifc'tjjßjijehenuS, according to the chairman, was that three and four ddy- men would be'working five days for different rates of pay. The transport was guaranteed out, but nothing was said about coming back. Information is to be sought on the following:—(1) Question of return transport; (2) what constitutes a day's work; (3) pay for wet days; (4) whether the Mackenzie County Council will subsidise the amount to be paid by the Unemployment Board; (5) definite cost per head per week; (6) conveyance for men obliged to return home in the event of sickness in the family; (7) appointment of delegation to wait on the authorities in the event of conditions being unsatisfactory; (8) water supply; (9) provision of fire place; (10) ambulance outfit; (11) question of accommodation. Old Boys' Football Club. ' The arlnual meeting of the Timaru Old Boys' Football Club on Monday evening was presided over by Mr C. S. Fraser. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £55 9s 2d. The report stated that the following members had gained representative honours: —Messrs W. A. Strang, J. Gonley, L. Mahan, N. SatteTthwaite, R. Gray, H. Graham, I. McDonald, R. Murchison; juniors, A. W. Ellis, B. Morrison, W. Tizard, N. Satterthwaite, W. Renton, E. Bishop, A. McCuish. The report congratulated Mr W. A. Strang on gaining the honour of captaining the All Black team against Australia. The officers for the coming year were elected as follows:—Patron, Mr W. Thomas; president, Mr C. S. Fraser; vice-presidents, Messrs J. F. K. Jamieson, F. J. Dunn, G. A. Simmers, D. Burnett, J. Waddell, C. A. Hind, G. F. Doyle, Walter Raymond, A. N. Leslie, T. D. Burnett, Dr. W. Fea; club captain, Mr A. Aitken; hon. secretary, Mr G. McFarlane; hon. treasurer, Mr A. Lawson; Management , Committee, Messrs A. W. Ellis, J. Marriott, H. Graham, C. E. Thomson, A. Millar; delegates to Rugby Union, Messrs A. Aitken and W.. A. Strang; coaches, Dr. W. Fea, Messrs A. Aitken (senior), J. Roberts (junior), H. Hawkey (third grade); hon. auditor, Mr A. Millar. Mr Strang returned thanks and stated that he would be giving the game a spell this season. Mr B. Morrison was presented with a cup given by Mr Walter Raymond for the most improved junior player. A circular letter from the New Zealand Rugby Union was read relative to the recent alteration of the rules by the International Board. Mr W. A. Strang said that in his opinion the wing-forward could be controlled by a capable referee. A motion that delegates be instructed to favour the 3-2-3 scrum formation was moved by Mr Thomson and seconded by Mr Lawson. As an amendment Mr Strang moved the support of the present formation. On being put to the vote the motion was defeated. On hecoming the motion, Mr Strang's amendment was carried by 20 to 17. Amateur Radio Transmitters. Seven amateur radio transmitters and eleven short-wave enthusiasts-at a meeting in Timaru on Monday formed a branch of the New Zealand Association of Radio Transmitters, to be known as the "South Canterbury Branch, N.Z.A.R.T." The meeting elected the following officers:—President, Mr H. B. Courtis; vice-president, Mr B. C. Warren; secretary-treasurer, Mr S. L. Johnson; and also an executive committee. The objects of the branch will be to foster amateur radio and to coach shortwave listeners, who -wish to become transmitters, in the syllabus as set down by the P. and T. Department for an amateur radio operator's certificate.
