Aj set of motor-cycle tools which had been buried in the ruins of one of Napier's business premises since the earthquake were removed almost undamaged by their owner, after they had been laid bare by men who are engaged in clearing operations. Although the fire swept through the building after the earthquake on February 3rd, a small electric light bulb escaped the effect of the flames. The tools and accessorieswere in an office placed in a box on a concrete floor. They were buried by the bricks and other debris when the building collapsed, and was shortly afterwards burnt. The owner thought when the box was uncovered that the contents might be salvageable, but it was with "the greatest surprise that lie found them in quite good condition, not at all in keeping with the fact that they had been lying in the ruins .and dampness for almost thirteen months. With cleaning and oiling the spare parts'and tools will be-as good as ever they were. Out of, all the cases of persons who are reported as "missing" in the whole of England, less than two per thousand are never heard of again.
