ROWING.
THE INTERP&OVINCIAL EIGHT. A TRANSPORT DIFFICULTY. A difficulty which has arisen in arranging for tliy transport of the Canterbury representative eight, which will compete for the Dominion title at Picton on Eastei Saturday, promises to bo overcome by the Canterbury Rowing Association's decision to charter a motor-bus i'or those oarsnieu who have not made private arrangements about travelling. A letter was received from the Avon Club at a meeting of the Association last evening intimating that the club was prepared to guarantee only the accommodation expenses of Avon members of the crew, providing that the Association could find suitable means ot transport to and front Picton at its expense. The reason for the club having adopted tins attitude, the letter stated, was that as the contest was interprovincial, the club maintained the travelling expenses of the crew ought to be met by the governing body, and not by the separate clubs, as suggested. It was decided during the discussion, that the Association arrange the cartage of the boats,, a sub-committee being appointed for tins purpose. _ The Avon Club would probably have to foot the bill for three men it was pointed out, and one of the club s delegates (Mr C. A. Stiles) stated that the club was not in a position to meet tbe expenses originally quoted—£2 17s bu a man. Mr Stiles stated that he hart been quoted an amount of £24 10s by a service company for 14 men. 'lhis would work out at 28s a man, and if this figure could be arranged, the club would be prepared to pay for its three menMr Stiles suggested that were private arrangements mads for the
majority of the crew, there might possibly be some followers of the sport, travelling by motor to Picton, who would take the Avon inen A It was finally decided to accept the tender submitted for the transport ot those men unable to make other arrangements} at the figure quoted by Mr Stiles 'Varsity Club's Denial. Another matter dealt with at last evening's meeting of the Association was a letter received from A. R. Douglas, coach of last season's 'Varsity crew, who wrote denying a statement, made at a meeting of the Association, .and published, that last year's 'Varsity crew when visiting Dunedin had lent the Canterbury eight boat to _a scratch crew. Canterbury raced against Otago on Easter Monday, using the Canterbury eight, and won the race, the letter stated. A published correction was asked for. The letter was received. Mr F. D. Kesteven presided at the meeting, and there were also present: Messrs R. E. Nightingale, \V. H. Evans, E. Velvin, A. T Evans, B. Taylor, R. J. Hobbs, F. I/. Booth, G. H. Hobbs, W. G. Atack. A. K. Woodham, and C. A. Stiles.
