April 9 —Cheviot T.O. TURF GOSSIP. Reminders. Acceptances for the Waimate Bijcing Club's Annual Meeting will close today. General entries for the Canterbury Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting, acceptances for the Great Autumn and Great Easter Handicaps, and first forfeits for the Champagne and Challenge Stakes are due at 8 p.m. on Friday. Change of Stables. The horses trained by E. T. Yuile for Mr W. Higgins have heen handed over to the Awapuni trainer, J. P. Coyle. These comprise Pass On, Gueress, ana Goy, who as yet have not 'figured on the "winning list. More for Sydney. The Auckland owner-trainer, Mr H. Rams, is contemplating a trip to Sydney with his two horses, Taneriri and Manawlienua, states a northern report. Hehas not yet made final arrangements, but if he definitely decides to make the trip he will leave within the next week or two. Needless Expense. At the monthly meeting of the Greymouth Jockey Club's Committee last week, the New Zealand Racing Conference advised that Mr A. A. Besley, De-puty-Registrar of Births, Deaths, ana Marriages, Christehurch, would be totalizator inspector for the Club's Meeting on Mareh 26th and April 2nd. The chairman, jMr T. E. Coates, stated that as economy measures were beipg sought by the Conference, he considered thfrt the position of totalisator inspector could well be alloted to a local Post Of" fiee official. There appeared to be thousands of men running about the country doing different jobs in connexion with racing. The position was ridiculous, and a waste of money. If the secretary could, by any chance, locate one of the numerous Boards set up as a means of saving money, he thought that it should be suggested that the club* could do quite as. well with one of its local men as totalisator inspector. "No one can watch the totalisator better than the British public," said the chairman. Toe secretary pointed out that it was possible that the totalisator inspector appointed would be at the Westport Meeting commencing on March _l9th, and would then have to remain right through the Coast Carnival, which carried on till April' 6th. It was resolved that, endeavours be made have a local man appointed. Bronze Sagle. No announcement has yet been made regarding Bronze Eagle's Autumn programme, and no doubt much will depend on his progress in the next few weeks : as his connexions may prefer not to ask a great deal of him unless he does really well, states a "northern writer. Dr. W. 0. Bing is very pleased with the way in which the crack has thrived lately and is hopeful that the colt will be in tl>e pink of condition for the antumn campaign. It was generally anticipated that the New Zealand St. Leger Stakes at Trentham would have been one of Bronze Eagle's engagements, bnt lie was not nominated for this race. However, he is still-engaged in the North Island Challenge Stakes, and possibly this will' be his first race in the autumn. In Winning Form. M. McCarten's star has been in the • ascendant this season, says the Sydney "Beferee." Any jockey is fortunate when he gets the riding of a first-class three-year-old, and Ammon, Ba alone has given McCarten an enviable income during the past six months. Caramba, in the Breeders' Plate, was • another of McCarten's profitable mounts and in important handicaps Vertigern has helped to swell his banking account. McCarten's percentages for feur winning monnts at Caulfield last month amounted to £lB4 10s. Liverpool Grand National. - The entries for this year's Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase, which closed on-January 12th last, were fewer than they have been in recently previous years, the total number of eligible horses who were nominated being only fifty-eight. The weights were due to appear on January 22nd, and the first acceptance on January 26th. The final acceptance is due to-day and the race will be contested* on March 18th. In spite of the comparatively small entry, however, practically every steeple* chaser of note in England has been engaged. The most experienced horse in the list is Grakle, who has figured in

every National since 1927, and was the winner last year. Two other previous winners in Gregalach and Shaun Goilin a/"e also again nominated. An interesting entry is Heartbreak Hill, who won the Sefton Steeplechase last November in the most impressive style, and is assured of a strong following if she goes to the post at Aintree. Yet another Irish hope is Impudent Barney, who won his native National at Fairyhouse, and who may therefore be accepted as one of the right cut for Liverpool. Easter Hero has, of course, finished with racing, but Mr J. H. Whitney can be represented by either Sir Lindsay or Dusty Foot—or both, if so inclined. Other entries which have previously endeavoured without success to win the greatest of cross-country events include Drintyre, Easy Virtue, Apostasy, Delarue, Solanum, Tamasha, Great Span, D.D.8., Richmond 11., Aspirant, Gate Book, Oxelose, Ballyhanwood, Alike, Eedlynch—a rather surprising entry, as the horse has lately been competing in "sellers"—Glangesia, and Kakushin. Of this group, the last-named pair will doubtless be supported, particularly Glangesia. Beference should also be made to Sea Soldier, who has been sent from America by a syndicate of Chicago sportsmen. Two young horses of note engaged are Vinicole and Inverse —the only six-year-old in the race. TROTTING NOTES. Reminders. Acceptances for the trotting events on the Waimate B.C.'s programme close at 8 p.m. to-day. Nominations for the New Zealand Metropolitan T.C.'s Meeting close on Thursday at noon. Acceptances for the Manawatu Meeting close on Friday at. 6 p.m. Acceptances for the Wyndham T.C.'s Meeting close on Friday at 5 p.m. Bears Fine Appearance. Surprise Journey has not been hurried in his work of late, but he is in good order at present and it will take little fast work for him to be at his best again. The Bowe Cup winner looks in ideal condition for near racing. A Favourite Haunt. The Yaldhurst reinsman, S. A. Ed- . wards, is a frequent visitor to Southland Meetings, and he meets with a very fair measure of success in that province. His most recent trip, which was to- the Invercargill Meeting last week, was rewarded by his driving Nelson's fortune and Probationer to victory on Saturday. A Promising Trotter. Louis Bingen, who gave great promise early in the present season but subsequently lost form, showed that he was returning to his bestf by his victory at the Gore Meeting on Boxilig Day. If he has continued to do so he should figure prominently in the decision of the Tertiuka Handicap at the Timaru Meeting to be held on Saturday % Patience Required. The double winner at on Saturday, Astral, has taken a long time to come right as C. S. Donald has been 'persevering with the brother to King Pointer for the best part of two years. However, his first start was at the recent Kaikoura Meeting, and it now looks as if the Belfast trainer will be well rewarded for the patient policy he has adopted with this horse. Baced Well at Last Meeting. Tarndale was narrdwly beaten in the President's Handicap at the Timaru Meeting, and had he not delayed slightly nt the start he would probably have finished closer than third. His next appearance will, be in the Timaru Cup on Saturday, where he will have a chance to amend his defeat at his last start on the same course. i ; Did Not Stay. . When Festival ran second to Arachne at Addington last month in good time she held out promise of becoming a use-1 ful two-miler, but she was beaten half | a mile from home in her next attempt, which was at Wellington on Saturday, after she had been responsible for the pace. She should not be placed in the discard as a stayer by that performance as she was finishing on well in her Addington engagement and that run suggested she would soon be returned a winner over the longest distance. An Improver. Nelson's Fortune, winner of the Coldstream Handicap at Invercargill, is a four-year-old gelding by Nelson Bingen from Fortmie Maid, bo he claims close relationship to Nelson's Victory, a most promising pacer who recently joined O. E. Hooper's stable. Nelson's Victory's dam is Miss Fortune, the dam of Fortune Maid, also Erin's Fortune. As Nelson's Fortune began his racing career only this season and he has now two wins and a placing to his credit he looks, as if he will follow in the footsteps of his relations, and will be found racing in better company than he encounters in Southland. PHAR LAP. STRONG OPPOSITION ASSURED. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION —BY , ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT.) CHICAGO, March. 6. With the nomination of Phar Lap received for the Arlington Handicap, the Arlington .Gold Cup, and the Stars and Stripes Handicap here in July, the Australian horse is likely to meet such outstanding American distance runners ns Twenty Grand, Mate, Sweep All, Equipoise, Pittsburgh, etc., the first-named two having dominated the three-year-old field in America last season. The races entered for each have an approximate value of 25,000 dollars. THE* TOTALISATOR. ENGLISH BOOKMAKERS' CHALLENGE. (UXtTBD PRESS ASSOCIATION —BY ELECTRIC TELEGBAPH—COPYBIGHT.) ' . LONDON, March 6. The latest challenge to the totalisator, which last year deprived the bookmakers of nearly £4,000,000, is the decision of some of the leading bookmakers to offer 5 per cent, above the totalisator returns from the beginning of the flat-racing season to backers who wish transactions to be conducted at totalisator odds. They hope tho increased business will counterbalance the sacrifice.

H. GRAY'S SUSPENSION.

APPEAL UPHELD. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TBLraBAM.) AUCKLAND, March 7. 1 An appeal by the leading New Zea- ' land jockey, Hector Gray, against his suspension for three months by the Judicial Committee of the Te Aroha Jockey Club in oonnexion with his riding of Antique in the President's Handicap on February 29th was upheld by the Auckland District Committee of tiie New Zealand Racing Conference. The deposit of £5 lodged by Gray was refunded. Mr A. P. YVils6ii, Chief Stipendiary Steward to the Racing Conference, was present, and Mr J. Pohlen represented the Te Aroha Jockey Club. Gray made a statement to the committee and called three witnesses Messrs F. Earl, K.C., W. C. Ring, senior, and J. H. Wallace, owner and trainer of Antique.' Antique finished fifth in the President's Handicap. An enquiry was instituted by Mr Wilson and the Judicial Committee returned the following finding :—After hearing the evidence and from otir own observations wo are satisfied that Antique was not run on his merits. We therefore decide to suspend Gray for a period of three months under Rule i!9o (2) of the Rules ot Racing. ENTRIES FOR ROSEHILL RACES. NEW ZEALAND HORSES.
