I that he had lived for seven years in the locality, that would be opened up by the completion of the road. To-send 30 pigs from his farm to the Addington market had cost £l7 10s, and apparently all other produce transport - costs were on the Bame basis. The man had had to leave his farm. ' Mr Scarff said that they should go further and urge the Government to ! stop putting off so many men, for the reason that when the work ceased the j payment of the tax ceased. I The motion was carried. Mv E. H. Andrews presided, and others present were Mrs A. I. Fraer, Messrs W. E. Leadley, R. J. • Ecroyd, J. S. Barnett,. I\ W. J. Belton, George Harper, A. Manhire/.G. EFFECT ON LOCAL BODIES. | As the reported decision of the Min-. ister for Public Works (the Bt. Hon. J. G. Coates),' to cancel all road authorities held by local authorities, had not been officially communicated YKy the local bodies concerned up to yesterday, County Clerks who were asked 4 what effect the decision would have on the work of their.. Councils, were reluctant to discusa_the matter at length. It appears that only rural districts.-will be affected, according to the City Engineer,; Mr A. B. Galbraith, and thatithe Christchurch City Council will not be involved.. . , . ' The local authority that will probably be hit the hardest is the Waimain County Council. "We have two or three jobs in hand now and it looks as will have.to be stopped, ' said the Clerk, .Mr G. S. Cowper. "Although we have not yet .received any official advice of • the cessation, apparently between £.>ooo and £6OOO will be affected. Tins-money is a£2 to £1 Government subsidy ana the works concerned include the tnrsealinff of the New Brighton road and improvements to -the. Christchurch-Russ-ley highway and.the Taldhurst road. Ohristchurch-Akaroa Boad. At present the Paparua County Council, according, to the C erk Mr G. Maginness, has no commitments. Tenders, he said had been called for paying at Upper Biccarton, but the County, was financing the job as it the Highways Board was short of funas The Council had foregone some of the maintenance money which they had authority to expend and which wpuld be sufficient to coveT the Board s share otthe navine of Taldhurst road. The Board had agreed to the of t e maintenance money *> r P "enaid ■DUTDose Plans were being prepared on the Christehurch-Akaroa road ** far as Tai Tapu, but apparently that would have to cease., - ? ■ Assistance Not Needed. "We are in the fortunate position of Council "We are able to run tne with the ■ . thn TTalsMr J. Mackenzie, Clerk to tJie Sa s well County Council, states that
Council also will not be affected as far as can be seen at the moment, and the same applies to the New Brigh-' ton Borough Council which has no roading work in hand and has none set down for the near future. In the Riccarton Borough the improvement of the section of Lincoln road between the Park and Whiteleigh avenue may be affected. Mr R. Sarjeant, the Clerk, stated that the financial effect on the project was as yet uncertain as the Council did n©t know what type of road was required and it would be useless to decide on the type if nothing was to be done. No doubt the work would be postponed. TRAMWAY BOARD'S PROPOSAL. ROADING AT M'CORMACK'S BAY. The Works and Traffic Committee re- ; ported to yesterday's meeting of the Christchurch Tramway Board that, with I a view tp finding work for unemployed, the committee had been considering the question 'of roading the land at McCormack's Bay which the, Board owns. It wguld be a long time before the sections could be offered for sale, but roading work at this time would absorb a fair amount of labour. The committee was in communication with the Sum•ner Borough Council respecting its requirements. The committee had also suggested to the Heathcote Council and to the Sumi iuSt Council that remunerative work for ' unemployed might be found by con[st rue ting . a roadway alongside the Board's embankment across McCormack's Bay. j The chairman said that a further report would be made when the engineers met and it was seen what , cost would be involvefl. The report was adopted.
