ASSAULT WITH INTENT TO ROB.
THREE YEARS' IMPRISONMENT. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, March 7. "We see by the newspapers that this sort of crimiß goes on in Australia, but so far as 1 am concerned cases that come before me will be seriously dealt with," said his Honour, _ Mr Justice Reed, in sentencing Leslie Jack Davis, aged 19, who admitted assaulting a taxi-driver with intent to rob. "For such an offence you. are liable to life imprisonment and three floggings. If we have further cases of this kind floggings will certainly be ordered." The Judge passed sentence of four years' imprisonment with hard labour, but was informed that the charge was not one of robbery with violence. His Honour said that the charge had been . wrongly laid. He had the prisoner brought back, told him he was fortunate, and sentenced him to the maximum penalty, three years' imprisonment with hard labour.
