RANGIORA. The fifty-second ynnual conference of the Ashley' District of Manchestei Unity Oddfellows was told at Rangiora or. Saturday afternoon. Officers present were; —D.G.M., Bro. G. A. McLean, D.D.G.M., Bro. J. Cooke, U.S., Bro. C. I. Jennings; minute secretary, Bro. J. A Ivory, P.D.G.M.; warden, Bro. R. H. Jones. Lodges were represented by the following deputies:—Rangiora, Bros. C. K. Goiding aud W. Smith, P.D.G.M.'s, J. A. Miles, E. Payne, and E. J. Mnes, P.G.'s. F. Harlow, N.G.; Amberiey, Bros. J. L>. Boyce, P.D.G.M., E. L. Manning, and H. A. Obery, P.G.'s; G'ust, Bros. H. Heinisch, P.D.G.M., and T. B. Lock. F.S.; Leithfield, Bros. W. Fletcher, PiD.G.M., G. D. Robertson, and D. W. Palmer, P.G.'s; Nil Desperandum, Bros. G. Smith, l'.D.G.M., D. J. Grant. P.G., and A. A. In opening the conference, the Grand Master expressed gratification that there was so large a representation in spite of the fact that it had been decided, us a means of economy, that deputies should attend at their own expense on this occasion. Reviewing the past year, he mentioned the visit of the Grand Master of the New Zealand Branch, and the opening of a new lodge at Cheviot as the outstanding events. . . In the report of the Committee o Management, reference was made to the opening of the Cheviot Lodge, ant to the fact that no further action haci been taken in respect to the institution of n ritual competition. The balance-sheet all< J auditors' report were adopted. Officers for the ensuing term were elected as follow: —District Grand Master, Bro. J. Cooke ; Deputy District Grand .Master. Bro. R. Cutler; auditor. Bro. J Cooke; book examiners. Bro. C. R. Golding. and J. A. Ivory. P.D.G.M.'s; Committee of Management. Bros. J. D. Bovee. H. Heinisch, and W. Fletcher, P.D.G.M.'s, and Gibling. P.G. The newlv-elected officers were installed bv Bio. H. Heinisch, P.D.G.M., the retiring Grand Master. Bro. G. AMcLean, was thanked for his services to* the district. Large congregations attended the annual harvest thanksgiving services at the Methodist Church yesterday. Gifts of fruit, vegetables, and erain were displayed in front of the rostrum, and the church was decorated with flowers and wheat ears. The minister, the Rev. S. Henderson, gave two appropriate addresses. KAIKOURA. The visiting judges for the Agricultural mid Pastoral Show were entertained at a smoke concert in the Masonic Hall on Friday night, Mr It. R. Laidlaw (president) presiding over [ a go/xl attendance. Prior to commencing 'the toast list, Mr J?. McGillivrav (Agricultural Department) gave an illustrated address on "Top-Dressing." A short toast list was then honoured, after which members adjourned to a dance given by the women, at Suburban Hall. The Messrs Guild Bros, danced an Irish Jig to the accompaniment of the bagpipes, and Mr M. Firkin also danced the Jig. The music was supplied by Miss M. Eaton, Miss E. Milligan, Miss M. Palmer, and Miss M. Wareham. Mr J. Schroder was M.C. Mr Laidlaw expressed thanks to the women lor organising the dance. BALMORAL. The lollowing is a summary of the weather observations for the month of February, taken at the State Forest Service Meteorological station, Balmoral. . Figures for the corresponding period last year are given in parentheses:—Meau maximum in shade 69.93 (69.35), mean minimum in shade 50.H1 (46.5), mean minimum on grass 46.17 (41.89), range 19.62 (22.85), mean temperature lor month 60.12 (57.92), highest " maximum in shade 81 (85), lowest minimum in shade 36, 35; lowest minimum on grass 23, 30; number of frosts I (2); rainfall 2.88 (1.71); number of days rainfall 8 (5); rainfall for year 4-07 (3.93). LOBURN . Keen interest is being displayed by" the local school children in the coming primary school sports at Kaiapoi on Saturday, 24 children' having entered for over 60 events. A meeting of the Lobuni Fruitgrowers' Association was held in the Coronation Hall, presided over by Mr J. W. Macleod. Messrs Goodwin and Caroliii,; Government Orcbardist Instructors. were present. An invitation was received for. all members to be present at'the Fruitgrowers' Conference in Christchurch. A meeting of the Loburn branch of the PJunket Society was held in the Coronation Hall. Those • present were Mesdames Goldsbury (president), Greenwood, Blytlie, Roberston, Cook, Henry Gibson, Webb, Croft, Galletly, \V etherell, and Hoskin (hou. secretary and treasurer). In connexion with the nomination of officers the committee was unanimous in inviting Mesdames Goldsbury and Hoskins. the retiring® president and secretary, to accept office for another year which they consented to do. It was arranged to hold the annual meeting in the second- week in April. One new member, Mrs Ashwell, was elected to tlia committee. Mr W. \V. Reid was the recipient of :i present from the members of the Akaroa Boating Club prior to his marriage. .1 he presentation was made bv the president of the Club, Mr P. U~. Riches. Constable A. H. Williams is at pre- I sent on holiday leave and Constable ard, Christchurch, is in charge of the local station. Mr \V. H Candy is leaving Akaroa ; shortly. He will be greatly missed , lrom lor'ul clubs, . having taken the keenest interest in all sport. ! , .
