At Saturday niglit' meeting of the Canterbury Fruitgrowers' Association, the speaker of the evening, Mr J. E. Strachan, was asked why he thought New Zealand apples had been entirely forbidden entrance into Japan. He replied that he believed the embargo was a result of an excessive fear of importing diseases with the apples.. The Japanese, having absorbed very fast manv lessons of Western civilisation, had,* in their extreme care and zeal, overdone many things. Mr Strachan relatod, as an example of their attitude. that when his narty had crossed the border from Manchuria into Korea, he had seen Japanese customs officials stamping singly every cigarette in a traveller's case. News from the Chatham Islands contained in the latest issue of the "Church News," refers to the successful recommencement of fishing at Owenga, with record catches. "TJnfortunntelv," reports the local -correspondent. "Sunday always seems to he an ideal fishing "day." Mention is made of a children's outing whereat there was prepared a "liangi," yielding a delicious feast of meat and vegetables served on cabbage leaves. \ - HORSE AND COW COVERS.
