THREE COMPETITIONS HELD. A WIN FOR NEW BRIGHTON. The Canterbury Surf Association's championships were contested at New Brighton jesterday, the Sumner Cup championship and the Benson Shield (for junior tuams) being decided in the morning and the Ray Blank Cup at 2 p.m. When the competition for the Sumner Cup started the- tide was just beginning to n;akc and there was a cold easterly wind blowing. The beach had been left dirty by tiie out-going tide, but most of the seaweed had been cleared away. The sea was smooth with a slight northerly drift. The rising tide necessitated a, time allowance to the various teams as the competition progressed. Stunner Cup. The buuiner Cup, a four-man alarm evtnt, was the firgt competition to be decided. Sumner A and Taylor'i Mistake A were first to enter the water. The Taylor's Mistake team lost several seconds at the start through their beltman failing to get properly away. Sumner B also had their line entangled and were compelled to withdraw. Eight teams competed, and the following ar* the placirgs: - North Beach 1, New Brighton A 1, Taylor's Mistake B and Sumner A (equal) 3, South Brighton 5, New Brighton B and ( Taylor's Mistake (equal) 6. Ray Blank Cup. The weather had become sunny and much more pleasant in the afternoon, and there were more spectators when the Ray Blank Cup, a seven-man alarm event, was held.
