BOARD OF GOVERNORS. LAST NIGHT'S MEETING. The Board of Governors of tko Christchurch Technical College met lafct night, when the chairman, Mr McGregor Wright, presided. Also present were: Messrs S. R. Evison, G. E. Franklin, J. W. Graham, J. J. Hurley, J". W. Roberts, A. H. Scales. B. Seth-Smith, G. Shipley, T. W. "West, and W. R. Gahagan. Donations Received. The following donations were received and thanks expressed by the Board: Christchurch Operative Bootmakers' ©9ciety, £1 Is; Builders' and Contractors' Association, £3 3s; Christchurch Printing Trades, £7. Financial Statement. The treasurer's financial report for the period of .Tanuary showed receipts amounting to £2732 17s 7d, expenditure amounting to £1763 17s 9d and 0. total credit balance of £IO2O 7s, A clause in the report of the Finance Committee stated that it had considered the financial position of t.he two hostels whore the number of boarders was considerably reduced this year, and found that large reductions had been made in the cost of carrying on. In view of. their value to the school and to the fact that in normal times they were vfell filled, the committee was of the opinion that they should be carried on. The clause was adopted. The report of the agricultural committee stated that the farm properties worked in conjunction with the agricultural course were in excellent condition and most of the crops had done well. Reconstruction Scheme. The report of the Building Committee outlined that it had approved a scheme for reconstruction that would provide a junior engineering workshop, a new tinsmith's workshop; two additional classrooms and a new place for the plumbing workshop in a rented building. Arrangements had been made for an application to be made to the Education Department a grant to cover the cost of the work and also the purchase of equipment required. Appointments. Tiio appointments committee's report stated that Mr T. McCombs, M.Sc., and Mr E. W. Tonks, M.A., had been appointed as relieving teachers on the fulltime staff of the College, and that application had been made to the Education Department for permission to appoint throe full-tinie permanent teachers to the staff. The - resignation of Mr A. J. Warren from the part-time staff had been accepted. He had received an appointment to the full-time teaching staff of the Dunedin Technical College. Home Science Bursaries. The committee also recommended the renewal of home science bursaries held by Norma French and Anna Cradock, and recommended' also that a busary be granted-to Jean Hansen. The recommendation was adopted. Principal's Report. The report of the principal stated that the present roll number was ap-

proximately 1500—100 in. excess of'the number at the corresponding period last year. The greatest need at present was for more classrooms.

The report added that of the evening school the "home science and commercial classes were unusually large, engineering was good, but some of the other trade classes were small, presumably owing to few apprentices haying been taken on by employers in the pasttwo years. School of Art Praised. The: chairman, Mr McGregor Wright, said that he wished it placed on record that; the Board- extended its very beßt Wishes to the School of Art upon its attainment of its fiftieth anniversary. That school, he said, had done a great service to the community at large in its training work there. There were at least six artists trained and now in other parts of the woild who were in the very first; flight and making a name in their art. He felt that the school had won a place deserving the highest esteem and-he suggested that the Board should consider at a later date the advisability of. giving some special assistance to pupilß of the College having particular aptitude in art to enable them to continue with advanced studies at the School of Art. The best wishes of the Board were placed 011 record. ;
