TIDES. It will be high water at 5.47 a.m. and 4.10 p.m. on the beach to-day, and 4.31 a.m. and 4.54 p.m. in th 6 river. To-morrow —4.53 a.m. and 5.18 p.m. on the beach, and 5.13 a.m. and 5.38 p.m. in the river. Amateur Athletic Club. A committee meeting of the New Brighton Amateur Athletic Club was held in the Surf Club Pavilion on Tuesday evening. There were present Messrs A. Hughes (in the chair), E. S. Pearson, C. A. Cooper, W. Queree, A. E. Cook, A. C. Boyd, H. C. Williams, K. Marriott, and T. IJulme (hon. secretary). The committee passed a vote of sympathy with Mr and Mrs C. T. Middleton in tlieir recent bereavement. A meeting of delegates of the Sumner and New Brighton Clubs was called for March 9th at Mr R. S. Pearson's residence to arrange a date for the inter-borough athletic contests. Free Kindergarten. The weekly whist evening held in aid of the funds of the New Brighton Free Kindergarten held in the rooms of the Association was very well attended. The prize-winners were Miss Peggy Saunders, Mrs J. Coddington, and Mr F. Neale, whilst Mrs E. Hancock won the lucky number prize. Belief Scheme. A meeting of all women interested in forming sewing parties and in other ways assisting in making and altering garments for the necessitous unemployed is being convened by the Mayoress of New Brighton (Miss I. A. M. Leaver). The meeting will take place in the Borough Council Chambers on Tuesday afternoon next. Methodist Church News. To-morrow (Sunday) the annual Harvest Thanksgiving services in connexion with the New Brighton Methodist Church will take place, when special anthems will.be sung by the choir, and Mrs Chapman and Mr Bernstein will give solos. The services will be continued on the Monday following. The choir is rehearsing "The Crucifixion," which will be sung on the Sunday prior to Good Friday. On Sunday last two ex-ministers of the New Brighton Methodist Church took the services. The Rev. R. Raine preached to a large gathering of the junior members of the congregation in the morning and the Rev. W. Walker addressed an equally representative gathering of adults in the evening. Bowling. On the New Brighton Green in the semi-final of the singles, Pattrick boat Holloway, and now meets Bisman in the final. In the Williams Shield competition Hooker's rink beat Pattrick's rink, and Bisman's rink beat Drake's rink. This leaves Hooker and Bisman to play off for the shield. Takaro Shield. In tho rinkß to be played to-day between the New Brighton Bowling Club and the Christchurch Travellers' Association for the much-coveted Takaro Shield on the New Brighton green the home club may not be quite at full strength, as A. M. Chivers, T. Robins, G. W. Bishop, and L. W. Besley are due to play in the first round of the champion of champions inter-club event on the Opawa green, tlieir opponents being the champions of the Sydenham Club. Picnics. The Oxford Terrace and the Colombo Street Baptist Sunday Schools . held their annual picnics in the Rawhiti Domain last Saturday. The sports grou'nd was used for running off the various events. Tho several hundreds present appeared to have a most enjoyable time. St. Faith's Church. The Ven. Archdeacon P. B. Haggitt, of St. Mary's, Merivale, is attracting large congregations to the week-day Lenten services ho is conducting at St. Faith's, New Brighton. The Rev. T. M. Curnow, the vicar of St. Faith's, is taking the Lenten weekday services at St. Mark's, Opawa, and at St. Daivid's, Belfast. W.C.T.U. Miss B. M. Harband, president of the North Brighton branoh of the W.C.T.U., goes north to-night. Miss Harband has been appointed by the W.C.T.U. (North Canterbury District Union) to act as its delegate at tho annual Dominion conference in Wanganui on March Oth. The Christchurch branch of the W.C.T.U., consisting of 26 Unions, has decided to accept an invitation from the Salvation Army to meet Mrs E. J. Higgins, wife of the Salvation Army leader, on March 26th. Municipal Golf Links. The date on which the municipal golf links will reopen for the season is still

indefinite, but it- will be fixed at a meeting of the Advisory Board and the Players' Committee to be held shortly. It is expected that the reopening -will be towards the end of the month, as the course is in splendid order and has much benefited by the recent rains. .. Personal. The Mayor of New Brighton (Mr E. A. M. Leaver) returns from Wellington to-day. ' Mr and Mrs Leonard Fisher sail for Australia to-day. - Visitors at the New Brighton tiafe include Mr and Mrs Strachan (Eakaia), Mrs Pilkington (Akaroa), M'iijs L. Hitch, Miss Watson and Miss A. Moore (Christchurch), Mr C. Waldren and family (Christchurch), Mrs and Miss Wilkins (Christchurch), and Mrs Rose (Dunedin). Salvati6n Army. Last. Sunday and Monday thanksgiving services were held by the Salvation Army in New Brighton. StaffCaptain Dry, manager of the Men's In-

dustrial Home, Addington, presided over the Sunday services. | Bandsman L. Talbot, of Spreydon gave a solo at the service for young J people in the afternoon, and the Salvaj tiori Army's Spreydon Band gave items I under the baton of Bandmaster G. Newton. The hall was filled to capacity for every service. ■ Lieutenant Hunter has distributed 62 joints of meat among the unemployed as representative of the Mayor's Relief Fund. Secondary Highway. A deputation consisting of representatives of Waimairi County Council, New Brighton Borough Council, and Christchurch Tramways Board waited on the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister for Public Works, on Friday with a view to getting the trolly bus route, Travis road, Rookwood avenue, and Bowhill road, declared a secondary highway. At last Tuesday's meeting .of the executive of the Canterbury Progress League, Cr. J. S. Ainsworth moved, that a letter in support of the deputation be forwarded to the chairman of the Highways Board and the resolution was carried unanimously. It is certain that the District. Highways Council will include this routo in its list of suitable roads next Jun6. It was not included in last year's list. Roads Report. At the ' request of the Council and various ratepayers, Cr. J. S. School Grounds. All the,, three school grounds in the borough show signs of improvement. Preparations are being made for ' tree and scrub planting. The work is being carried out under the No. 5 Scheme, and at the last meeting of the committee of the District High School the chairman expressed the Appreciation of the committee of the manner in which the work was being carried out. NORTH BEACH. PERSONAL. Mr F. St. John Parson, of Osborne terrace, North Beach, is leaving shortly on a yachting tour in the ketch, Water Lily, which a party of five has purchased for the tour. The party proposes to leave Lyttelton about March 15th, and to make Fiji* the first port of call. Most of the party are old Christ's College boys. A party consisting of a representative from the Waimairi County Council and the Tramway Board together with the Mayor of New Brighton (Mr E. A. M. Leaver) left for Wellington on Thursday evening to- interview the Minister for Public Works (the Kt. Hon. J- G. Coates) regardnig the reconstruction of TraVis road, Bookwood avenue, and Bowhill road, in permanent material. This action has become ®eceisary, owing to the advent of trolley* buses on part of what was the No. 10 route to North Beach.
