FARMERS' UNION MEETS. , The monthly meeting of the TimaruISt. Andrews Branch of the Farmers' (Union was held yesterday, Mr P. R. jTalbot pi-esiding. In reply to the Union's enquiry, Distributors, Ltd., advised that the comjpany had no control over the price of | sacks or the loss msde on them. The chairman said that the - comtplaint was a long-standing one, and he j thought that representations should bo | continued in preparation for next sea'son. Mr A. Ward expressed the view .that ias prices for produce were now back to [pre-war standard, he thought a furIther effort should be made ,to secure !the allowance of 2d instead' of Id. On his suggestion, Messrs P. R. Talbot iand W. J. Black were appointed to [enquire as to the organisation to which rthe Union should apply for redress. At the Temuka Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, before Messrs W. F. Evans and H. E. Gapper, J.P.'s, William Frederick Leah pleaded guilty to a charge of theft of £2 from John Allans Uewlands, at Jncholme, on August llth, 1931. He was sentenced to three months' imprisonment. ARUNDEL. The second annual meeting of the Arundel Women's Institute was attended by about 40 members, Mrs Charles presiding. Fitch), Messrs J. 0. Hay, T. E. Parry, W. E. Evans, W. Lindsay, and G. "\V. Collett. i The rector (Mr D. B. Chisholm) was also in attendance.

Apologies were received from Messrs G. J. Sbackleton, H. M. Whatman, and 0. G, Holmes. The Rector reported that the roll, as ut March Ist, comprised 70 girls and 92 boys, a total of 162, or one less than the corresponding total for 1931. The school would accordingly remain in the same grade as for the previous two years, One hundrod and six old pupils had returned, and 56 new pupils had been enrolled. An analysis of the roll showed 51 junior girls and 19 senior?, 4G junior boys, and the same number of seniors. Of the total of 162, 159 were free place pupils, two junior, and one senior boy being paying pupils. Only two pupils (girls; had taken advantage 9f the one-year extension of the Junior Free ' Place recently granted by the Minister » or Education. A vote of appreciation was passed to the staff for the very satisfactory examination results obtained. The re-appointment to the Board for a further term of two years of Messrs H, M. Whatman and G. A meeting of the executive of tho Geraldino Branch of the Plunket Society was held on Wednesday afternoon, the president (Mrs J. M. H. Tripp) occupying the chair. A statement of accounts in connexion with the recent Plunket Day showed that tho receipts exceeded the very satisfactory sum of £9O, with several small sums yet to come in. The president expressed the satisfaction of the Society at the generous response to the appeal. The nurse's report for the last two months was as follows: — Geraldine— January: Visits to rooms, 62; visits to homes, 126; telephone calls, 25; new babies, 8; car mileage, 308.
