Ho was believed to be the senior priest in the Anglican Commitnion in the British Empire and was certainly the oldest clergyman in the Gbristchuich diocese. ' All his iifc Mr Smyth was a keen player. He was in his younger (J»ys a keen rider to hounds and hia enthusiasm and skill as a yachtsman him in pood stoad uhfirt conducting holiday missions at the little church in Stewart island, where lie did splendid work among the Maoris. with whom he was a great favourite. In Akaroa. too, he was able to visit on a bout all the small bays in his parish. On tli# occasion of his 90th birthday a luncheon in his honour was given by Bishop West-Watson at Bishopscomt. He was married in Lancashire. His wife died in 1028 at the age of years. Jlr Smyth is survived by one son, the Rer. H. M. Smyth. vicar of St. Peter's. Onehunga. Auckland, who is at nrc&ent visiting Ciiristclnirch, and by three daughters. Miss H. M. Smyth, Sow Brighton Miss D.
