A distribution-of fruit to poor families took place at the relief office i>£ the Hospital Board last week, when over> 100 large cases, representing two and a half tons of fruit, toere given' away to over 1200 families. The; fruit was principally the gift of a large Auckland* firm,- but. among the benefactors was a Chinese market gardener, who, seeing a long queue of men waiting for relief at the Board's office, gave them two cases of bananas and one case of pears. No extra staff was engaged, by the Board to deal with the distribution, which was arranged so that every needy family received a supply of fruit. The chief donor went to the Board's office to see how the fruit was distributed and was so satisfied with the result that the next day he increased the amount. "No gift could have been better," said Mr W. K. Howitt, chairman of the Belief Committee of the Board. "Every pound of it was prime fruit, and it was simply splendid that 60001b of it should go ? in a direction where it could not be more fully appreciated."
