EMPIRE CHAMPIONSHIP. A SENSATIONAL CONTEST. (USITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—BS ELECTKIC TELEGrIt APH —COPYRIGHT.) LONDON, March 3. At the Albert Hall, in the Empire championship,' Larry Gains (the Canadian negro) outpointed Efon McCorkindale (South Africa). The decision was loudly booed, many thinking the South African was slightly ahead. It was one of the mo'st sensational heavyweight battles in Great Britain. There were repeated bouts of terrifib in-fighting, and fierce double-handed exchanges. McCorkindale early forced Gaina on the defensive, but the Canadian was apparently the better tactician, and by delightful footwork evaded the attacks.. McOorkindale in the seventh sent three rights to the face, seriously damaging the Canadian's eye. The decisive round was the ninth. Gains rushed in, and a couple of. rights floored the South African for a count of eight. He then immediately sent him - down for nine. McCorkindale rose very groggy, and was punched round the ring for 90 seconds, but Gains was unable to find a vital spot. McCorkindale, despite the fact that his left eye was closed, rallied magnificently, and seemed comparatively fresh. He forced the fighting in the twelfth, but Gains recovered, the last half-minute being filled with furious slogging. In the thirteenth round McCorkindale had Gains at a disadvantage, and scored several hard rights, but was unable to get a knockout. Gains came back. Both were fighting tigerishly and continued to punish each other severely in the remaining rounds. Mt-' Corkindale, in the fifteenth, was trying a right" when he overbalanced and gat down for three. . The contest .was Overclouded by the death of-Jack-Goodwin, trainer of Gains, who collapsed at the flngSide in' the thirteenth round. ', .
