f ♦ CONTRACTORS FINED FOR BREACH. , (rasss ASSOCIATION T£uE3.IAU.) WELLINGTON,; May 14. In a reserved judgment the Magistrate, Mr E. Page, S.M., held t'nat the Hansford and Mills Construction Company had committed, a breach ot the Carpenters' Award in connexion with the employment of certain carpenters in the erection of St. Patrick's College at Silverstream : by fauin.fr to pay them for time occupied in travelling daily back and forth to Wellington and the cost of eonveyftlThe Magistrate could not find that the liability was dependent on the place where a Journeyman was engaged. The engagement of one which, he quoted as taking p'.aco on the job did not absolve the employers , irom paying his fares and travelling . time. This man left home at 6.10 a.m. ana reached Silverstream at 8.3. The Magistrate pointed out that this meant nearly four hours a daytravellmin view of the fact that the case meant that a substantial siim must b« involved in connexion with a job or that size, only a nominal penalty, or 10s was imposed. A similar case i" connexion with bricklayers on the job met' with a penalty of Is.
