CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION.
MEETING OF COUNCIL. « , ;
Mr W. E. Carey presided over last night's meeting of'the Council of the Canterbury Automobile Association.: The treasure. (Mr B. Falck) said the only recommendation from the Finance i Committee was that the strictest economy must be exercised. - The amount of i subscriptions outstanding was £.2047. Mr W. Osman, of Ashburton, was elected a member of the Council in place of Mr T. Y. Wardrop, resigned. The South Island Motor Union asked to bo supplied with cuttings of reports of meetings of County Councils at which county finances were discussed, as thus 'the Union might obtain sufficient evidence to oppose the derating proposals. The letter was received. Highways Conference. Mr F. W. Johnston, referring to the "highways conference convened by_ the Progress League, said it was the friendliest and most effective conference that had been held. He hoped a modicum •of the programme outlined would be carried out. Mr X W. Freeman said the League was to bo congratulated on a-gathering of 64 representatives of counties be-, tween the Conway and Rangitata rivers. If the counties and motorists stood shoulder - to shoulder they could ensure that the money raised from motorists was spent on the roads. He had learned that the Board had no intention o.f visiting the South Island, but the move on the part of the Progress League meant 'that the Board was under tlio necessity of coming to the South Island to hear the counties' grievances. _ Mr B. Falck said the representatives of all - the counties (with one exception, which later withdrew its , opposition) had spoken highly of the Board, and none wanted it disbanded. Roads .Committee. The Roads .Committee recommended that Messrs F. W. Freeman, L. M. Y\ 11-son, -son, B. Falck, G. W. Teneli, and the secretary. (Mr J. S. Hawkes) be a sub-com-mittee to confer with Mr Paterson, as-
sistant-master at the Sydenham School, with reference to school children traffic patrols. A meeting had been arranged with the Arthur's Pass National Park Board at Arthur's Pass on June 3rd> to select camping sites _ and parking places, and to_ discuss other matters in connexion with the Park. Messrs W. R. Carey, F. W. Freeman, L. M. Wilson, and G. S. Morris had intimated that they would be able to undertake the trip. The report .was adopted. Camping Committee. Mr L. M. Wilson submitted the Camping Committee's report, which; set out that Sir Arthur Dobson had accompanied Mr Wilson to Hanmer for the purpose of making a plan of the camping ground, giving its area and boundaries; and also to report on an efficient water supply. < • The report on the water supply also was submitted, » Mr !F. W. Freeman'paid a tribute to the work put in. by Sir Arthur in preparing the report. The report was adopted. Other Matters. It was decided -to grant £lO to the Peel Forest Board, and to ask Mr W. Osman to continue to act as the Association's representative on the Board. A letter from Mr H. E. Webb to the president was read complaining of the irregularity of parking on Cambridge terrace between the Cas iel street bridge and the Montreal street bridge. Mr Webb wrote that in some instances two cars took up the space of three, and he suggested the. Association should ask the City Council to have lines painted so that motorists would know to park. It was; decided to take up "the matter with the City Council. ■ Mr F. W. Johnston drew attention to the growing practice of motorists, instead of drawing up on the side of the road, drawing up on the edge of the concrete or bitumen.' This practice was positively dangerous, not only to people getting out of cars, but also by obscuring oncoming cars. It was decided to "write to county, councils adjoining the City on the subject. -
