DR. HEWLETT JOHNSON. The King lias approved the appoint-, ment of the Very Eer. Dr. Hewlett Johnson, Dean of to {he Deanery of Canterbury, vacant by" the resignation of the Very Rev. Dr. Hugh Richard Lawrie Sheppard. Before taking Holy Orders, Dr. Johnson, who was born in 1874, was an engineer. He is a B.Sc. of Manchester University, and B.A. of "Wadham College, Oxford. Dr. Johnson was an Oxford rowing Blue and a< keen 6portsman iu his younger days. Ho has expressed original opinions 011 a variety of subjects. After making a series of surprise visits to three Manchester theatres, he said: '' The chorus girls are prettier, happier, and fresher than they used to be." He believes that all railway carriages should bo convertible into sleepers at a moment's notice. He once described how, during a night journey in a Continental train, he slept in "the luggage rack. 111 1929 the- Soviet Government banned a visit vrjucli Dr. Johnson had proposed paying to Russia.
