PREVENTION OF CRUELTY.

MEETING OF CANTERBURY SOCIETY. Mr J. O. Jameson presided ,at a meeting of the Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, held yesterday. A letter from the French Society for the Protection of Animals stated that the use of the automatic killer in abattoirs was shortly to be adopted in France. The secretary reported a balance in hand of £13213s 4a. Accounts amounting to £57 7a Id wfere passed for payment. The Society's Inspector reported visiting horse and ppultry saleyards, inspecting stock yards, and issuing a number of cautions. The organiser of the Junior League, Mrs A. H. Millington, reported that forty new members had been enrolled. There were 1160 financial members .n the League. A drawing competition would be held among members at the end of May.
