HIGHWAYS BOARD
ABOLITION ADVOCATED. COUNTY COUNCIL NOT SATISFIED. | The Waimairi County Council, at fts - meeting lust night, decided to ask the Progress- League to call a meeting of local bodies to discuss highways matters. s ' The chairman (Cr. C. E. Cross), who \ moved in the matter, said it was about ' time the Council ' took action and urged the Government to make the 1 Highways Board do the work it was 1 set uo to do, He had been in Wellingf ton the other day and had been absoi lutely turnod down in respect of the i North road; ho was told that the I county would have to pay £3 to £l. i Or. W. J. Walter said he was pleased that the chairman .had .come to his way of thinking. He (the speaker) had advocated the abolition of the Board, but hj.» did not blame the Board, but the Government, which needed the money. The Government, he thought, was -the cause of all the trouble. If the Br>a»"d were given a free hand, they would get . something done. He still thdught that the Government should be asked to abolish it. (Hear, hear.) Cr. W. G. Chapman said that if he could get his way he would abolish the Board. He understood that the Board had prepared plans and specifications 1 for the North road (the portion to connect up with the new Waimakariri river bridge), and had said not one word to the Council about it. , Cr. T. 0. Newnham said that he thought the.v were ungrateful to the i Board, which had helped then) with their main roads. Cr. Walter: The motorists did that. ■ ■ ■ ' The chairman's motion was agreed to. ' A lengthy, and at times heated, dis- | cussion arose over a letter from Mr , H. W. Harris, engineer to the Waimakariri River Trust, regarding the ' county's action in holding up the proclamation of the road connecting with the new bridge. The chairman gave notice' -of motion to rescind the resolution arrived at by i the Council at its previous meeting declining to sign tne document tinder r which the proclamation procedure would commence.
