ACCIDENTS.
0 CROSSING SMASH. .CAR-DRIVER INJURED. • V Andrew O'Connor, a married man living at 11 Mandevillo street, i Lower Biccarton, was injured when the motor-car he was driving was struck by a train on the Belfast road crossing early yesterday morning. It is stated that O'Connor drove the motor-car, a Ford model, out of Borthwick's freezing works gate, and swung west to go over the grossing. He was struck by the engine while attempting to straighten out to proceed along Belfast road, there being a double impact. On the second impact the machine was tossed to the side-'of the track against a wooden gate and badly damaged. O'Connor was thrown clear of the Ford, and suffered injuries to his head, hip, and knees. He was admitted to tho Christchurch Hospital, and late last night was reported to be in no danger. John Fraser, a married man, Oamaru manager for Wright, Stephenson and Company, and "William Cooper, a married man, a taxi proprietor, of Mosgiel, were killed in. a motor accident at, Clarendon, . near Milton, early this morning. / Two . other occupants of the car, Charles Harry Leith and, Cecil Hazlett, escaped serious injury,' The car was coming through to Dunedin from Pembroke, and apparently skidded in loose shingle and swerved across into a telegraph pole. He left Oamaru at four o'clock yesterday, afternoon,,and was to return tp Oamaru this morning, as he had important business Engagements here. Mr Fraser was one of the leading business mpn of Oamaru, a jnan of striking personality and the Highest i integrity. ,He was held in the greatest respect, afid 'there will be many who will mourn the loss ,of a true and kind friend. ■ He was- < born; at Waimatuku, Southland, in 1883, the eldest son of Mr John - Fraser, a prominent, farmer of Southland. He attended the local school, and'' at • the age of 18 entered the firm of Wright, Stephenson _ 'and Company.' Some years ago he visited Australia, and went as far aS Alice i Springs and othpr centres inland. Ho worked on all stock routes from there-to . the boundary of' New South ; Walesi In he .was- appointed t manager of the'' Oamaru branch of Wright, Stephenson and Company, Ltd., which position he held till his death. In December of the same year he marrjed Winnie, second • daughte'r of the %ev. John Nixon; of New Plymouth. In 1920 he visited Great Britain and, the Continent.
